LAVATORIES FOR WOMEN.

TO THE EDITOR.

Silt, —Everyone must agree as to the great want of the above; but I fancy there will be a rock ahead as to tho cost and management of them. Not having been in the old country for some timo, I am ignorant on the proceedings there; but it seems to me it is not entirety a Dunedin afftvir. The persons for whom they will bo erected come not only from the suburbs, but by train from long distances ; consequently, it should not be the city ratepayers only that should bear the expense. My idea is that the matter should, be tried first in the four chief towns of New Zealand ; that the Government should erect the buildings, and either themselves find the different sites, or arrange with the city corporations so to do ; and that a small charge should be made sufficient to pay interest on the cost, repairs, attendance, etc.—l am, etc., Prooresj.

VO THr, eOITOIt.

Sir, —When advocating that the National Council of Women should take the above subject in hand, I was perfectly aware it was the duty of the City Council to have control of all matters of this kind. I had, however, in my mind's eyo that end in view, in this way: Tho. present Government profess to legislate for the benefit ot tho masses, and, knowing they go in for advanced legislation in all directions, the National Council might have indiieed them to erect lavatories in the four centres, not as a precedent, but- as an example for others to follow, as every little town would want the Government to do the same for them,' and they might do so if a town attained a certain population before asking to be subsidised 'in. this way—the City Council to undertake to keep them in thorough repair and cleanliness. The City Council are as poor as Jcjb;' but, if assisted by the Government, there' should be no difficulty in the way. i think, Sir, if you were to apply your pen in as vigorous a manner as you did in advocating the erection of tho oiiy abattoirs, I have no fear of the result. —I am, etc., Eebohii Much Wanted.
