GOVERNMENT COMPENSATION FOR THE SEA COMING INTO ST. KILDA.
TO THE ETJITOB. Sir,—lt would be interesting to know by what process of reasoning, judging, or valu-; . ing, the gentlemen who came round came tc agree to the amounts put down to each per-; ■ son's mime for damage by the sea breaking into.St. Kilda. Surely, not by the number of dead trees!. Everyone who lived whore . the water really did come, was equally inconvenienced and put about with damp .houses all • through the winter, and it was irmqh'woreo for . those.who had a number of young children: and yet I suppose they don't count. There is a vast amount of difference between £40 to bo paid to three claimants and the other amounts to be paid. In fact, before the money is paid the .matter wants looking into, so that each/ may get a fair share of the £400. It should have been advertised, and each person having a claim should have been asked, to send in &' written statement of their loss and amount, claimed. Then the valuer would have had"., something to go by when he came round, and he would have known how far the £400 Would go. Now, there are some who have not put in a claim yet, but have just as much right- as the. others to get it, so that it would have been ' better to.advertise at first.—l am, etc.. Salt Water.-
