MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

Unity- Lodge, No. \b, 1.0.0. F., held it* regular fortnightly meeting in the Friendly Societies' Hall, South Dunedin, on Monday evening, N.G. Bro. O. H. Brooks presiding. The principal business was the consideration of the report of the committee appointed to inquire into the advisability of openiiig a Rebekah Lodge. Thß report presented was favourable, and the committee urged: the lodge to lose no time in starting a branch of the Daughters of Rebekah. The report waa warmly approved, and unanimously adopted. Considerable discussion took place, and D.D.G.M. Bro. Pattison, of Linda Rebekah Ledge, greatly assisted by explaining to some extent the working of the institution. It was decided to hold a public meeting on Thursday, 18th inst., for the purpose of instituting the lodge, the details being left in the hands of the committee. All the members present signed the petition to the Grand Lodge, aßking for a charter. Four candidates were proposed during the evening. D.D.G.M. Bro. Pattison and. N.G. Bro. Burt responded to the toast of the visitors. Receipts, £10' 99 Id.

At the usual weekly meeting of the Dundas street Literary and Debating Society, held on Monday evening, Mi1 D. Foster delivered a lecture on "Phrenology : Its Uses and' Teachings the close of his remarks, which were illustrated by means of numerous blackboard drawings, etc., Mr Foster was, on the motion of Mr M. Cable, seconded by Mr R. Brinsley, accorded, a hearty vote of thanks.

There was a good attendance at a recent_ meeting of St. Paul's Association, when the programme was arranged for " the gentlemen's evening."' Two readings were given by the president (Archdeacon Robinson) and recitations by Messrs P. Carroll and S. Sawyer. Mr Downing sang " The bugler," and Mr . Wathen "True to the last" and "The gallants of England," the latter being an encored number. Miss Lo Keong presided at the pianoforte.

A very- successful concert and dance was held in, the Henley Public Hall on Friday, Juty 29, the'object being to provide funds for a piano for the Taieri Ferry School. The? good weather and a most attractive programme drew a very large audience. At 8 o'clock the chair was taken by Mr T. Craigie, who made a few suitable remarks. The concert then opened-with a pianoforte duet by the Misses Oraigie, and songs were contributed by Mrs Greenwood, the Misses Craigio' and M.Chalmer, and Messrs Morton and Clatworthy. The audience was an appreciative one, and loudly applauded each singer, • the Scotch songs, " Comin' thro' the rye (Miss Oraigie) and "Loch v Lomond" (Mr Clatworthy) both securing encores. Miss K. Knarston and Mr T; Sinclair were also recalled for their very amusing recitations, and Mr A. Paterson was obliged to repeat -at least a part of the Highland fling, for which a bagpipe accompaniment was kindly siipr plied by Mr D. Bruce.' Mr Robertson gave an amusing Scotch reading, and the first part concluded with a very pretty fan song by six girls (Misses I. and M.'Craigie. J. M'Kegg, J. Sinclair, L.1 Tanner, and K. Sinclair) from the Ferry School, who looked charming in their long muslin dresses, big sashes, and hair dressed inv Japanese style. Among other iteiria in the second part was a pianoforte solo by Miss M. M'Kegg, and a splendid exhibition of Indian club exercises by Mr Hyland. At the conclusion of the concert the performers were thanked by the chairman^ and the hall was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with great spirit until the early morning, Me 'i R. Craigie proving an effioient M.O. Tha result financially was so good that there ia every prospect of the object of the concert being speedily realised. , The ordinary meeting of the Dunedin corps o£ the St. John Ambulance Brigade was held at the Central Fire Brigade station on Monday evening, when the honorary surgeon (Dr Closs) delivered a most interesting lecture-to the. members, taking up the subject of. " Wounds." The leoturer succeeded 'in placing before his audience many important facts in connection with wounds and their treatment, and at the conclusion of his address he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks upon the motion of the superintendent. The monthly meeting of the Christian Endeavour Union was held at the Y.W.C.A. Rooms on Monday evening, the Rev. F. W. Borehara (president) occupying tho chair. The formation of two new societies was re< ported, one of which applied with affiliation with the union. The chief business was tha making of arrangoments for the monster missionary demonstration. It was eventually resolved on the recommendation of the committee—"That the demonstration beheld in the Agricultural Hall on Tuesday, August 30, at 7.30: that it take the.form of a_ linin-: light exhibition, each of the leading mission* ary societies throwing on the screen views illustrative of their own operations; that all Endeavour Societies, Christian Bands, and Sunday schools be invited to occupy seats in the area1 of the hall,- the gallery being thrown open to tho public: that a collection be taken up, which, after payment of .expenses, shall be divided between the various missionary societies." A Hall Committee and a General Arrangements Committee were appointed to carry out the _ arrangements, and, after other routine business, th« meeting terminated.
