This morning a deputition from the settlers (Ctovm tenants) in the Palmerston North forest reserve waited upon the Land Board and asked ■ that their next two years' rent be remitted on account of the losses thej.had sustained. Some of the settlers, it was said, had practically lost everything. A list of'the losses ko far-ascer-tained was handed in; and showed that one pettier had suffered loss to the extent of £52 10s another £60, others £27 10#, £29, £36, £42. £58, £66,' £83 Bs, and £148 respectively. ' RAILWAY COMPETITION. Thereporfcof the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, jost published, formulates its complaints concerning the irregularities iv the -railway service.. The report refers to three special grievances against the Hallway department in its - management "of the lines competing with tho Manawatu railway—namely: (1) The detention of northward Manawatn passengers . at Woodville; (2) the delay in the transport of produce; from "West Coast stations north of Longhurri by going rouud by the Bimutaka line; and (3) the discrepancies in freights, of which the report remarks, *" It is no part of the Government's duty .to use; the ;funds' of the I whole body of, taxpayers in opprensive trading, compstition with a section of those taxpayers.".
