«a»——— We regret to record the death of Capfc«ife Johu Anderson, which occurred in the JSoipital at 3 o'clock this morning, as the result of the ibjui-ies he sustained on the steamer Waikare tit Preservation Inlet early in the mouth. Captain Anderson joined the service of the XJnioa Steam Ship^ Company nearly 22 years _ ago; arid since that tiuie was conSDantly in tbeir employment. He was in charge of a grekt number of fcheir ships, and had a, very Successful-ind honourable career. Prior to his joining tbe Union Company he was for 11 years in the New Zealand pilot service,, a-nd for two years as first mate in the employment of the New Zealand Steain.Nftvigation Company. He joined- the Union Company; as first offioer of the Tsraoalri in July, 1876, when that steamer and others of the,Ne\v Zealand Steam Navigation Company's - fleet became the property bt" the Union Company. ' He then held a master mariner's foreign-going certificate, aud was promoted to be master of the s.b. Wellington iq Marrh, 1881; He subsequently commanded the Wanaka, the; Penguin,' the Rotorua, the Haurbto.Ythe Tekapo, the. Rotokino, the Waihora,\ j>nd the Mauaponri, aud he was. traofferred from the last-mentioned steamer to the,command of the company's new steamer'the Waikarei in August last.
