(Per Uniteb Press association.) Auckland, December 28. The Chess Congress opened yesterday. Barnes (Wellington) defeated James (Wellington), Jowitt (Auckland) beat Le Lievre (Auckland), H. F. Smith drew with L. P. Smith (both of Auckland), Gfrierson (Auckland) drew with Wood (Auckland), Pieisants (Rangitikei) defeated P. H. Smith (Waimea); Hows had a bye. To-day Howe defeated Le Lievre, Barnes defeated Edwards, Pies.»ants defeated Jpwitt; James had a bye.
