FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
The members of the Crystal Spring Juvenile Temple Lodge held their usual weekly meeting in the lower Choral Hall last Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, and as it was the first meeting of the new quarter the following officers were installed by Bro. J. B. Mcrrikfc:— S.J.T., Si 3. Hunter ; C.T., Sis. Simpson; V.T., Sia Lack; P.C.T., Bro. Simpson; secretary, Bco. J. Braithwaite; A.S., Si 3. C. Cameron; Mar., Sis. Liddle; D.M., Sis. Churchill; Chap., Sia. B. Chalmers ; F.S., Sis. Wardrop ; Trea., Bco. Watt; G., Bro. M'Lean, sen. At the commencement of the last quarter two valuable prizes were promised to tho two members of. the temple who should bring the most candidates for initiation. The prizes have been awarded to Sis. C. Cameron, who secured 21 members, and Sis. A. Hunter second, who succeeded in securing 15. During the past quarter the temple has prospered wonderfully, over 50 new members having been added to the roll, making a total membership of nearly 100. A gentleman from England on a visit to the colony had promised to give a silver watch to the brother and a gold brooch to the sister who secure the most members for the temple duriag the next two quarters, ending in April. Every encouragement is beiug given to the members of the temple to encours-ge them in their work, and the Oryetal Spring bids fair to be the largest teanple in New Zealand. The asaal meeting of the Hope of Cavershain Lodge was held on Thursday eveningl. There was a good attendance of members and visitors. Two candidates were proposed for membership. It was proposed that the lodge hold aa open mission meeting iv a fortnight. The officers for the new quarter were then installed by the L.D. Bro. Thorn 23 follows:—C.T., Bro. B South; V.T., Sis. Clarkgon; P.C.T., Sis. P. ■ Thorn. Tie following took part in the harntony.:—Bros. Moore, M. B. South, Dann, and Donovan. A. hearty vote of fch&nfes was accordedto the visitors. Bros. D. Cameron (Pioneer), Donovan (Lily.of the Valley), Young (Alliance), and Sis. Bowie (Hops of Dunedia) responded. The lodge waa closed in the usual fovrn by the C.T. after a very enjoyable evening.
The Loyal Orange Lodge William Johnston, No. 12, held a pound night on Wednesday evening, whea there was a very large attendance of members and friends. Bro. C'srrick, E W.Cr.P.M., occupied the chair. P.M. Bro. Peterson and the G Chaplain Bro. Berevforsi were on the platform. The R.W.G.PM. opened the meeting with a few well-chosen remarks on the prog<e?s of the order. He then c <lled on the G. Chaplain Bro. Bcreaford tn make the presentation of a beautifully-framed P.M. diploma to the present Past Master Bro. T. Fiddis for his services to the lodge during the past two years. The G.C. spoke in high praise of the way in which Bro. Fiddis had conducted the lodge, during his term of offiae. Bro. Fiddia thanked the brothers for tbeir handsome P.M. diploma, and urged all young men present to rally around the good old banner. The following assisted in carrying oat the programme:—A piauo solo, Mi 33 Johnston : song, Miss Black-; violin solo, Master Scott; comic song, Mr Jas. M'Connell; songj Mias IK'Ftrlane ; piauo solo, Mi«s Toiler; duet, Missss Peterson and M'Kerrow; duet, Mr Black and Miss M'Farlane; song, Miss Holland; recitation; Mr Mills; step danes, Ma?ter Popham; violin solo. Master Scott; songs, Miss Johnston, Mr Black, Mr James M'Conuell, and Mr Caufield. Raf reshraeuts were handed rouiid at intervals during the evening. P.M. Bro. Peterson moved a vota of thanks to al! who had so kindly assisted in making ono of the most, enjoyable evenings ever held by the lodge. Miss Johnstone acted as accompanist.
The usual fortnightly meeting of thfl Loyal Caversham Lodge, M.U., was held on Wednesday evening, N.G. Bro. Hill in the chair. Owing to the amount of business to be transacted the proposal "Night with Dickens" was postponed to a future occasion. P.P.O.S. B;o. Black responded to the toast of " The Visitors."
Oq Friday the members of the Linda Rebekah Lod/e, 1.Q.0.F., Roslyn, held a social evening;, to which a number of their friends were invited. The N.G. (Sis. Farnie) explained that the object of meetings of this nature was twofold—first, to bind the members more closely together arid to enable them to know more of etch other; and, secondly, to let outsiders know more of the working of the lodge, with a hopn of inducing them to enter into the bonds of Oddfellowship. A very pleasant evening was spent, during which songs, readings, recitations, &2., were contributed by Mrs Cotton, Misses Stathatp,. Farnie, Durston, Mercer, Alexander, Sutherland, Messrs Crichton, Ovens, Siranhan, Springer, Wilkinson, Cotton, aDd Lindsay. ,'■•■'■
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge was held in the Stuart street Hall on Monday evening, when a lecture on Rudyard Kipling was delivered by P.G. Bro. Islanro, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. P.C.S. Bro. Hopcroft and Bro. Gallagher 'contributed-to the harmony of the evening. Receipts, £70 13s 4-d.
