Drunkenness —Jane Whittaker, who had not linen before the court for some time, was convicted and discharged ; and a first offender was similarly dealt with.
Numerous Larcenies.—AnnicCurrie,a middlesged woman, was charged with stealing 10 yards of serge material, value £4, the property of Messrs Dick and M'Kechnie.—lnspector Pardy stated that the -ei-je was stolen from the premises of Messrs Dick and M'Kechnie in George street, and was subsequently found in accused's house amongst a quantity of other stolen articles, which would form the subject of other charges against the woman.—Evidence was given by Messrs Dick and M'Kechnie aud Plainclothes Constable Cooney. The latter stated that he searched the house of accused, and, finding the serge there, charged the woman with stealing it. She said she did not steal it, but she got it from her cousin—Mrs Johustoo, of Lee Stream—before she left Outram.—Chief Detective O'Connor deposed thafc Mrs Johnston had mads a statement that accused was related to her by marriage, but she did not give her the serge.—Accused at this stag-s withdrew her pica ot not guilty aud
I substituted a plea of guilty—lnspector Pardv handed in accused's record, which included a j number of convictions for larceny—A sentenceof j six months imprisonment was inflicted. Accused was then charged with stealing a tin fcettle, valued at ?,s 1,1, from John Otto, Hanover street.—She pleaded not guilty.—After evidence accused made a statement, in which she said that she got the kettle from a woman who went to \\ ellington.—Accused was convicted and dis-charged.—-She was further charged with stealing a wringer, a tablecloth, and four serviettes, valued at 30s, the property of Sarah Wall, ; Dowling street; and also two tablecloths, valued , at 4s, the property of Amy Restieaux, Dowling street.—Accused pleaded not guilty, but after evidence she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in each instance; the three sentences to be cumulative, or 12 months ih all — Accused, who pleaded not guilty in each instance, was also convicted of the following offences and discharged :-lheft of a hair broom, a tin meat ; j dish, and a hammer, valued at 3s, the propert»of ' James MLaren; theft of underclothing, valued at ts, the property of Annie Prior. York place.— A charge of stealing 20 yards of sateen and print dress material, value 13s, the property of some : : person unknown, was withdrawn Unnatural.Offence.-A young man named Tnomas Mackie, who was defended by Mr Hanlon, was charged with committing an unnatural pdVnce at^hree Mile, near Hyde, on the 18th inst.—Afterfc vidence, which was of a peculiarly , uisgusting character, accused was committed to take nis trial at the next criminal sittings of the . Supreme Court, Bail was allowed—accused in . his own recognisances in the sum of £SO, and two . suretiei of £10 each. ; Stealing an UjiBRF.LLA.-John de St. Croix ' ws a .
