(Pa& United Press Association.) Auckland, October 13. At the inquest oa Mrs Wakefield, who took "Rough on Rats," a verdiot was returned " That she committed suicide when of unsound mind." She bad been drinking. The jury added a rider, without reflection on the person j who sold tbe bottle of vermin killer, against tbe indiscriminate sale of Buch poisons. At the inquest on Charles H.1 Sbuttleworth, a gumdigger at Tnupaki, who hanged himself in a whare, it was stated in evidence that he had lost mousy at the Anckland races sent by his mother to take him to England. A verdict was returned of "Temporary insanity." He was single, a native of Middleton, Lancashire, where his motber resides. Deceased had threatened i several times to commit suicide. j In reference to recent accidents on the Queen street wharf. Captain Duder, harbourm-ister, reported to the meoting of the Harbour Board that three wero cases of- falling from the wharf while under tbe influence of liquor. At tbe inquest on James Cromwell, aged 17, drowned landing from the fetry Btearaer Chelsea at the wharf, a verdict «f "Accidentally drowned" was returned. Captain Deven, of the ferry steamer, deposed to seeing deceased on board. He seemed able to walk, but appeared dozod when on the wharf. He could not be called drunk. Deceased was a good Bwimmer. A sad fatality occurred on Monday at Ashburton. It appears (says the Ashburton Mail) that Miss Lizzie Fullerton, eldest daughter of j Mr Biair Fullerton, sheep inspector,, had for ! some time past been a painful sufferer from toothache, and that an operation to remove several teeth was necessary. |As she was suffering from heart • disease, Dr Greenwood would not sanction the operation. Of late, however, a marked improvement in her health having manifested itself, tbe doctor thought it would be safe to attempt the operation, which was entrusted to Mr G. F. Dodds, dentist. The doctor, howevor, wishing to be on the safe [side, used. ether instead of chloroform.' All went well until the operation was just about complete, when the heart of the patient censed i work, and, though every effort was made at I resuscitation, these were fouud unavailing. I Much sympathy is felt for the parents and | other members of the deceased's family, who j are thus deprived of a beloved daughter and I sister. We understand that the breathing of deceased uuder ths anaesthetic was quite right, and tbat the fatal -result is attributable to tbe shock of the operation. Our Bald Hill -"lat correspondent writes :— " A rather serious buggy accident happened near Shingle Creek, between Bald Hill Flat and Roxburgh, ou Friday. It appears that Mr W. Facey, of tbe Criterion Hotel, Alexandra, was driving a pair down one of the numerous hills i iv that locality when the break refused to act, I and the horses bolted. Mr Pacey was thrown j off the seat, the horses going on driverlegs'with I tbree ladies in the trap. Miss Reany jumped out, and escaped with a severe shaking and some very nasty bruises ou the face and head. The remaining occupants, Mrs Pacsy and Miss M'Naugbton, wsra thrown out later on and seriously injured, to what extent at ths time of writing I am unable to learn. The sufferers were attended to by Dr Hodges, of Alexandra, and removed to tbeir homes there the same evening."
