ACETYLENE, THE NEW LIGHT
TO TBB KDITOK. Sin, —We feel assured that your correspondent the manager of the Water Gas Company has been precipitate in his writing. His information re acetylene gas is not up td date, and consequently, hn CKlcnlstions and deductions are of uo value— i c , whilefc it in quito true that the quotation for calcium carbide was 4d per lb wheu Mr Eunson brought the acotylene ligiit under nbrics, Uter sdvicea eiva tbe price at £4 per ton, iv England and 20dol per ton in America, with the alleged probability of it being manufactured at Sdol per ten. Naturally Mr Watt is jealous of his specialty water gas, and ho one will blame him for seeking to defend ii against a. Dewcamer, but sach is the ordur of things, and unleSß we are very much mistaken the acetylene has come to stay. Why? ■■~.■ (a) Because of its brilliancy and purity and '■the simplicity and safety of its manufacture. (b) The portable nature of the apparatus uecensary for its manufacture. (c) Xhfl comparatively «maU cost of the material and apparatus necessary for its production. We are, iSec, John, Hkbcus and Co., Ajenta for Acetylene Gsta Generators. Dunedin, September 1. ■ THS NEW SCHOOL AT KOKONGA. TO| THB BDITOE.' Sib, —The Education Board bus .decided to erect a school iv this township, and the press informs un that two members of the board are coming at au early date to select; a site for the building; but the question is. Where is the school to be ? The river Taieri tuns through the township, and, ss a matter of fact, people living either side of tho river having children to attend school would say : " Thiß is the propor place for a. school." If we arc not.mistakeu, tUe board as a rule endeavours to divide the distance as nuarly aar possible between two schools. If that is the case, on the Kycbarn side there are two schools within about three railen—viz., the Kjeburn and Lower Kveburn schools. On thd other aide of the rivar the nearest school is the Caubuni school, distant ab..ut fix miles. Thsn, according to this dictum, the new school should be about four and a-aa.if wiles from the Capbnrn and Kjeburn schools reapectively, but with the exception of one or two all are in favour of the school being erected ton the reserve, a healthy spot of about 12 acres, set apart for that purpose in the township proper—a piece of land second to none in this part, adjacent to the railway ntation, butcher's, stores, and posh office We think it is generally admitted that a country school eqouli) be aB near as possible to the post office, as parents know well the convenience ot this,—Wo are, &c, , .
