CASUALTIES.

Westpobt, January 17.
An old miner in 1h.3 district named George Ball was drowned in the Mokihinui river this morning. He was crossing with two mates named WiUiatnson aud E. Jeason in a flatbottomed boat whsn the boat ran on a rock and was swamped. Williamson and Jenson managed to swim ashore, but Bull, who was unable to swim, was carried over a fall and drowned. He was unmarried. The body hr.s not yet been recovered.
Palmeeston North, Jannary 17. A man named James Howe, a surfaceman on the Wellington and Manaw&tu railway, has bsen. admitted to the fco3pit»l suffering from internal. injuries caused by ' bsiog crushed between a truck and a houae which w.\s being removed. The injuries are of a serious nature, and Howeis in a precarious condition.

Wellington, January 17. DuriDg the pasoa.ee of the barque Tillie Baker from New York; when off Western Austra' a, a sailor named Harry Wyberg was washed uv«rboard. A uor'-west gale was blowing at the time, and nothing could be done to save the man, who Was 37 years of age and a native of-Sweden.
