A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. A message from the sea, which had been for 13 months or so working its way to land, was picked upon'the beach at Karamea by some children on the 18th of last month. It was enclosed in a bottle, and was as follows:—"From s.s. Southern Cross, Alfred Child, commander, from London to Melbourne; all well: 30th October ISS4. This paper was cast adrift to test the current from above steamer in latitude 4728 south, lungitude U4"l6east." It will be seen on reference to the map that it was thrown overboard Bome*here about 700 miles due south of Cape Leuwin. It has, therefore, drifted to the eastward, and with an inclination to the north.

The s.s Tokomaru left the George street pier yesterday afternoon for London, via Wellington. She took on board at Port Chalmers over 1000 bales wool.

The schooner Isabella Anderson has completed cargo, and is ready to sail for Kaipara.

The schooner Marmion is expected to tail for Napier to-day; thence she goes to Mercury Bay to load for Dunedin.

The barque Alcestis was towed up from Port Chalmers yesterday morning and berthed at the Victoria wharf, where she will load cargo for . London.

Branner, from the West Coast, and Corinna, from Lyttelton, will arrive at Dunedin Wharf this morning. ' Very heavy westerly gales have prevailed along the coast during the last few days, and the s.s.
