Considerable excitement wab caused in town to-night by the news that the extensive freezing works'at Tdmoaha were on flre, snd a telephone message was sent to town for the steam engine to be kept in .readiness for emergencies. Later news js to the effect tbat tbe fire is got under. It was confined to two five-roomed Cottages, part cf a block attaohed to the works. Fortunately the strong wind which was blowing carried the flames in the opposite direction from the wuiks, and the firemen at the works were sufficient to cope with tbe fire. There was no insurance.
■ Geraldine,January 16. A iiie broke out iv Dunlop 'and Co.'s large store at Geraldine al about 6.30 tbis morning, the building being completely. burned to . the ground Tbe insurances are :,—Royal, £1000 on the stock and £500 on the building ; Commercial Union, £1500 ou the stock ahd £350 On the building. Owing to a strong breesse tbo other buildings ' were in danger. The fire originated near the boot department. [A Timaru telegram gives the amount of the Royal Company's, insurance on tbe Btock is £2000, partly reinsured.]
