THE TUAPEKA FLAT SHOOTING CASE.
In connection with the shooting by the Chinaman Loo Kat, a correspondent writes that Loo Kafc had recently won a prizs of the value of about £100 in a Chinese lottery, and had received assistance from tbe woman M'Longhlin in getting through the money. Once the money was spent her interest in Loo Kat ceased; bufc he, on his part, became intensely jealous of a person wbo visited fche woman. He appears, therefore, to bave determined to kill her and then shoot himself. Tho Tuap'-ka Times states that Dr Neweil looks upon Loo Kat's condition as hopeless aud likely to end fatally in a week or loss. The woman M'Lougblin received a o-.*uplo of scilp wounds and a fractured thumb. Nojlon, who broke open the door of the woman M'Louglia's house to go to her rescue wss *ouaded in the thigh, the bullet passing from tho outside to tho inside. The yonng man Kelly was struck on the thumb by a stray rf_ot, and a gpeuv shot struck a girl named MAuley nnder the arm, but tho wound waß very slight;. The first shot Ored at Mrs Sing Lee, theownerof tbeho use occupied by fcho woman M'Loughlin, .truck a large brooch sbe wore, the ornament being shattered to pieces. The second shot struck Mrs Sing. Lee on the left side, gianced round one ef her ribs, and found a lodgment in her back, where it still remains. Had the revolver been of a heavier calibre, there can bo no doubt that tbo consequences to fcboM. who had been shot at aod wounded would hava been mnch more serious. The police bave so far net been successful in finding the weapon, but the empty cartridge cases and the weight axd siz-* of the bullet* show thafc ifc could have been little more than a toy pistol. It may be said thafc fchis attempted murder and bloodshed is only what mijht have reasonably encugh been at any time expected as an accompaniment of the disgraceful conduct which bas made the Chinese Camp a reproach snd a shame to tbe district. ■ It has long been Rn __asylttm fcr "*-*- moßt **b*"*donea of the unfortunate class of women from Dunediu acd other places; and between them .nd'the Chinese loafers and gamblers, aod the large number of European young men who hannt the place, the Chiuess Camp ha* become synonymous for everything that is loathsome and vile, Tbo worat-offenders tn.inife.Uy, and those whoso offence is leas* capable of extenuation, are the European youths who spend the greater part of their spare tims in this moral sink.
