ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
: At tho Central Fire Brigade Station on Friday evening, the 19th inst., Dr Stechouse delivered his concluding lectute to the man's fkst-aid ckss. The lecturer dealt with the various ways of lifting injured persons, and thosa present had demonstrated to them the method of rescuing an insensible person from a burning building, the different forms of handseats for the carriage of patients, and also the improvising of temporary stretchers. Considerable attention was devoted to the lasSnamed, and the use of sacks, coats, blauktts, &v., for tbe pnrpoMs, was fully explained. The lectures emphasised the necessity for a thorough test being made of all extemporised stretchers before a patisnfc was placed on th«m. Stcetchtr drill was gone through and the lifticg explained, togetto- with the proper method of passsiug an obstae'e, and also the placing of a-stretcher in a sailway'or-other vehicle. At the ntxti lecture Dr Stenhouse will give iastructions in practical work, and will also pub the class through a series of te3t questiono. A public meeting of ladies aod gentlemen instrteted ia tho formation of ambulance classes at Alexandra was .called by. the n:ayor, and hold, in the local.Public Ijibrary last weak. Tbe' first menth's work (Jane) of the Ounedin Centre shows very good results. Four first-aid classes completed a course of instruction and passed through the bauda of tho examiners. The percent age of thofe obtaining certificates, &c. is considerably higher than lasts'- year, being 63 as ag&inst 47 for the previous season; aad this despite the'fact that the percentage of failures is much ■ larger, the- latter being accounted for .by the higher standard now h quired by. the examiners. The fourth lecture of;fcbe local branch oE the St. John Ambulance Association was held in Trinity Church Schoolroom, Lawrence, on Thursday evening. The lecturer,Dr Newell, first examined the class on the preceding Ucfcure, and then proeeedad to give an account of the various caus^ of inseosibiiity;;aud the most effective methods to be employed ia relieving them. Ha afterwards described the treatment necessary for ■ the restoration 6F persons apparently drowned, as wdl as the treatment of burns and ecaldt-, and top firttt-aid methods of treatment of persona suffering from the effects of poisoua. The class then want through practical work. The Central Committee hope to see several other branches established throughout the country districts before the termination of the season. The second lecture of the womea's class of tho Oatram branch was giv«n in the local echooi on Wednesday of last wesk, when there was a large attendance, 32 ladiss beiog pres«nfc. The annual meeting of the Wellington centre of the association wis held last week, when his Excdleaoy the Govsrncr presided tnd the certificates and medallions were preseuted by Lady Alieo Bojle.
