DUNEDIN HOUNDS.
Saturday's meet at Wakari was "a if airly-suc-cessful bh'e. The sffcernoon \ps,cold,.bnt dry overhca_.,>and the few hours-of sunshine had melted the ioa and frozen ground,;th&'going beiug better IhahwasexpECted, added to'which the attendance was a nuhierous oue. The run was jfp'fome extent different to previous runs, three e^fcra febceis having to be/crossed through a lane,,ahd the hunt should- ba grateful to Mr Marshall' for the', trouble' be 7 kad^ t_.ken in arranging a good run.for tjhem.".That gentleman, oh his- grey ro'a.e, • was everywhere in order tu'.sse thiugs were all. right. But the best laid schemes of mice and men g*iig aft agley. Spills'- were rather' rrt-querit, but only iuoue i'_stai>ce was anything wo<se than, a shaking experien:ed. Belmont fell over some rails, shd Mr Anderson hiidJthb misfortune to break his srm above the elbow... A- member of an ambulanceJol'ass beiug.close handy, first aid was eki-.•fully rendered; and the sufferer cou.veyed fco town, Mr Gourley promptly placing his buggy under offer.' This was the only drawback to aii otherwise pleasant afternoon's outing. Of thos- present I.noticed Mr TKeid on Kelly ; Mr Patterson, Stockings' ;-:MrFloo|iton, Moonlight; MrAnderson, Belmont; Mr Orbell, Dundonald; Mi-, Nixon, Jack Harkaway ; Mr Q. Newman, Donald Diunie ; Mr Thos.-Cotton, Duu-'em-all; Mr James Cofcfcou jun:, Brin';' Mr James Cottch sen.. Reckless.; Mr Farquharson, Silvermaid ;Mr Farquharson .'(No.'.-2),- on a clever bay colfc;'. Mr A. King,Donovan; Mr Brady, Riverina; Mr Mcore jun,,■",Lady Ted-diugtbo;f-ltsv Downes, Lady Grey; Mir S. Gourley, Silverfcail; Mr Janies Gourley, Waitangi; Mr It. Ellis, Mustang; Miss Macdonald, Skylark; Miss Forte3cue,,a bay; Miss Grant, Informer ; Mrs Walcot, Fairy. The huntsman's (Mr Frank Smith) mount was Digby; the whip's (Mr J. B*mber); Dunblane. There was a goodly number of spectators on-wheels, including:—Mi- and Mrs Roberts; buggy and "pair; Mr de Lacy and party, pair horses and- .drag ; Mr Sinclair, horse and dog cart; the Hisses Stephenson, with their well-known carriage and pair of bays. The start took place in a paddock near Kir W. Passmore's reii'denpe... The drag_man having been sent on hia milsion, the master (Mr Gourley) passed the word,, '" volunteers to the froufc," which was followed by a musicil blast from fche huntsman's horn; and was responded to by 16 horsemen, who. filed into the enclosure, looking as if tbey meant td be at the end of the run or the ..post and.rails would have a bad time of ifc. Their mount*! were of various descriptions, one or two had competed for National steepleehise honours and seme' for hurdle races." There was' the genuine hunter, and two or three who the day before hadb.en bringing the cows home.. A low, musical whimper from the pack, and. in a trice haat'smah and whip are over the first fence, followed by the field, the majority of .whom got over the next obstacles.
. Solid and tall, . - Is the rasping wall, That stretches over yonder, was answerable for a few malcontents, who determinedly refused. Through several small enclosures oh Mrs Murphv'sland were several low but stiff pcst-and-rail fences.Jcver one of which Dun-em-all fell with Mr Thos. Cotton, giving him a.nasty shaking. A young fellow riding a bay also came down, and; the horse joined the leaders riderless. The metal road beinjjcrossed a district lane was entered; soft} and slippery, with three fences of bluegum' rails, which farther weeded out the field. The huntsman on Digby and the whip had stuck clbs& to the hounds, their mounts f'-ucing splendidly. Close behind were Mr Reid on Kelly, Mr Nixon on Jack Harkaway, Mr James Goutley on Waitangi, and Mr S. Gourley on Silvertail, in much the same order. The last fence'was a stiff fchree-railer, and as this would not break and the horses were tiring ominous raps could bs heard a considerable distance Jaway. After the welcome speil a return run was laid out, the whip changing his mount for ..Toxa. Spills this time were ..s plentiful as iv the first run. Toxa came to grief, getting rid of Bamber, but w.is cleverly caught by Mr Roid; Bamber remounting him and finishing the run. Mr Bsird's mount (Novice) also made a mistake, and Mr Patterson's horse (Stockings) got fast in a fence and bad to receive assistance to get extricated. But the most severe mishap fcan in the case cf Belmont, who fell with Mr Anderson, breaking his arm. o
; The pack will journey to Waikouaiti on Wednesday, and Saturday's meetatHalfway Bush— tne ltt_t. l Saturday's meet of the season, when ifc is hoped'there will be a bumper attendance. Nimrod.
