ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

The regular meeting of the Ceut.a. Committee was h«sld at the Garrison Hall on Thursday eyening, 11th insfc., Colonel Wales occupied the chair, and there were also present—Drs Smith and Will, Messrs Applegarth, A'_b.n, Livingston,' Campbell, Farrant,. Moir, and Barclay. A large, quantity of correspondence from lecturers, branch seer, tai ies, and others was deVlt with. Superintendent Mearns reported having fitted up two ambulance hampers and also an ambulance kit, which were sent for tbe inspection of the committee. A hearty vote of thanks was accordi-d to Mr Mearns for his trouble in this matter. Ifc was resolved to convey to Dr Teevan, upen the occasion of his departure from Dunedin, the thanks of the association for the services which he had ren-' dered in the patt, both as a lecturer and as j an examiner. The formation of new branches in connection with the centre was approved as under :—Wiutcn, Kurow, West Tai-_ri, aud Arrowtown. The following medical men, having rendered assistance to the centre as lecturers or examirers, wfra ..appointed to the honorary raedic.il staif:—Dr Stevens (Kuvow), Dr Neale (Palmerston), Dr Churoh (Naseby), Dr Roberts (Duuedin), Dr Allan (Mcsgul), Dr Cattan (Outn-m). Dr Sutherlaud (Milton), Dr Neweil (Lawrence), Dr Riley (Winton). The Secretary repoited that the nsmber who bad gotiu through or were undergoing instruction throughout the centre during the present season was approximately 720, made up of about equal numbers of men and women. A request from the St. 'John Nursing Corps for the institution of a course of invalid cooking classes was received, and ifc wns decided thafc arrangements shouid.it possible, be made in , this direction. The- question of permanent rooms .for the association was discussed, 'and ■ a sub-commiotea appointed to make : inquiries on the matter and report at text meeting. The following publications were received:—Dr Scott Riddell's "Manual of Ambulance," Mrs Craven's " Guide to District Nursing," Central Executive Committee's Report for 189., Report of. the Council of the Victoria Centre for 189-1. It was decided to order Dr Lawless's 'TFirst Aid to the Injured." Accounts amounting to £17 6s 3d were passed tor payment.

Drs Colquhoun and Roberts have sent to the secretary^ of the centre their report of the examination of the women's eveuing ambulance class. The following are tbe successful candidates :—Miss A." The examiners iv their report commended some of tbe work, particularly in fche written portion. In a nuuibsr, of.-cases, however, the candidates did not give a satisfactory exposition of the means of inducing artificial respiratiou—they understood how it should, ba dose, bub were laokiug in practical application. at Mosgiel will be conducted by Dr Cattan, of Outrun. The date is*not yet fettled. • The weekly lecture of the course was delivered by Dr Smith to the men's class of the West Harbour branch.on Tuesday evening. The.subject was "The Restoring of the Apparently Drowned," and after giviog full directions as to the. procedure in such easeß, the lecturer instructed in bandaging, &s. This being, the" last lecture of the course Mr W. Birclay, chairman of the branch, on behalf of the members thanked, the-doctor for the lectures and expressed the p!eaMire,they had had iv .attending. Dr Smith briefly replied. The c'ass will meet for practical work on Tuesday next,, aud the examination will be arranged for the evening of the 30th inst. The fifth lecture to the gentlemen's class of the Mosgiel branch was delivered on Friday, 12th inst, by Dr Allan, who made his .subject very interesting, aud it was much appreciated by those present.
