CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Charitable Aid Board, hold on Thursday, was attended by Mesfira J. Robin (chairman), P. Miller, H. F. Hardy, P. fil'Gregor, W. Snow, and W. Mooeon. An apology for the non-attendance of Mr Clark was received.

The requisition of the Benevolent Institution Trustee3,Rinountingto£3672is6d, was piwssdfor payment, an interim payment of £500 having been made on the 7th ihst. Other requisitions pans«d were: Industrial School, Auckland, £12 03 6d ;,Female Refuge, £19 6s lOcl; St. Mary's Industrial-Sohool, Nelaon, £116 8s 6d. • t The Chaibman observed that ho was giad to see that the South Bunedin Council had paid its contribution.

Mr Fisher (who was present waiting for the meeting of the Hospital Board) remarked that the council were cob satisfied with the manner in which the money was bedug spent. The CnAtRMA.K replied that the board had nothing to do with that. After this 16c.il bodies would have io pay th'feir contributions monthly instead of quarberiy. Mr Fiahev'said that the board should ba satisfied to get the South Dunedin Council's contribution quarterly. He was very doubtful if South Dupedin iehonld pay the money at all. They were dissatisfied with the way it was being spent. They were satisfied it was being spent wrongly. The Charitable Aid Board was entirely in the hands of the trustees.

Sir M'Gkegob observed that the board had hotbiDgto do with the trustees. It was independent of them, and they were independent of the.board. ..: ', ■ .

Mr Miller stated that so far as the local bodies" putting up tbeir backs" and saying that they would-not pay their contributions because the money-was not being spent right was concerned, it'was simply nonsense. If they were ■ dissatisfied they could either put different men in -as-trustees or get the law amended. ■•• •■ ■•• ;.•:•■ i .

' The Chairman spoke of the fact that several bodies were in arrears with their contributions. He- suggested that the board should sue for the recovery of these, and, so as not to be unfair, he proposed that they should select the local body against which proceedings would be taken by ballot. He moved-in that direction. • >■ ■

The motion was carried,
