Sir, —Some three months ov go a°o a pa*agraph appeared ia youc columns statins that a movement was on foot in London ta purchase ffie house in Cheyne Row, Chelsea, whore Thomas Carlyle spent the greater part of his life, to put it in decent repair, to open it to visitors, and collect appropriate memorials lhare. '
As an admirer I sent a small contribution to the fund, and have just received an acknowledgment, from which it would appear that the project has not met with tho success it deserve" So far some £1700 has bean subscribed, the Emperor of Germany heading the list with £100, and the other subscriptions ranging from £50 down to Is from a poor scholar. Another £1700 ij wanted to bring the scheme to a successful issue.
In a Scotch community like ours there may be a few ardent admirers of their fellowcountryman, nineteenth century prophet and teacher, who would like to contribute their mite to this fund. If so, would you, Sir, kindly take charge of any subscriptions that may be sent to you, and ( forward them on to the treasurer, Mr B. F. Stevens, 4 Trafalgar Square, W C. ?
