DUNEDIN FANCIERS' CLUB.
TO THE EDITOE,
Sir,—The list of special prizes to bo given by the above club at their ensuing show has just copae into my hands, and I would like to make a few remarks on same. / '
The number of prizes allotted to the poultry section is 44, distributed as follows :—Cochins 7; game bantams, 9 ; game, 8; Polish, sgolden pencilled Hamburgs, 2; white Leghorn*, 2; bantam (not gasae), Spanish, silver pencilled Hamburea, silver apaugled Hamburgs, Plymouth Rooks, Hinorcas, and Audalusians, 1 each, 7; 3 cups and prize for moat points in poultry, 4 ;—total, 44.
It seems strange that so many prizes (nearly h*U) should be allotted to game bantams Cochins, and Polish, while browu Leghorns (one of the largest classes) Dorkings, Wyaudoltes, Brahmas, Latigshaaß, and Houdans receive no special prize whatever; and the large and useful classes of fowls under the headings of Spanish, Plymouth Rocko, Minorcas. and Andalusians receive only one prize in each class, and that for mo3t points. The eight prize 3 given for game are distributed as follows :—Most points in game 1 • most points in black reds, 1; duckwiug hen 1•' Malay, 1; white game, 2; Indian game, 2.' In connection with this distribution I would point cut that last year there were only two Indian game birds exhibited, yet this year two prizes are allotted to that class. There are several other curiosities which will at once strike any fancier examining the above list. It appears that the Dunedin Fanciers' Chib think the only classes of poultry to bo encouraged are game bautams, Cochins, and Polish At any rate, that is the view of the matter taken by country exhibitors, to whom the present prize list offers very little inducement to take the trouble and bear the expense of sending their birds to Banedin.—l am, &c , Lawrence, July 18. Country Fancier.
