HUNT AT WAIKOUAITI.

A visitor oa Wednesday to this usually quiet litble village, seeing tha large • gathering of horsemen beitridiag mounts of all descriptions, would at cute, infer that somethiug unusual waa about to take place,' and such was the case. Punctually at 3 o'clock, tho master (Mr Bessie;), attired in the orthodox red, appeared riding his ciever hunter Beatrice. Thin was the signal for tighteniog of girths, &a., and a move was made to Mr Bl'Garry's homestead, from one of whose paddocks a course had been carefully flagged off over good hunting countryfor a distance of about three raites, the jumps, 15 in number, cousist'iDg of stiff post and rail*, gorse Ledges, andu wide water jump Amongst those 'present mounted were : Messrs Aitchwaoti, on Royal Sovereign ; Munroe, La?car ; Templeton, Faiat Heart; Cantrell, Pighunter; Toomey, Prince Alfred; Orball, Councillor; Bray, Sportsman ; Coeksrill, Mabsl; Mallock, Fraud; Stronach, Prefcty Good; 'Hawkins, Amalgamation (n clever grey); Buckland, Boney ; Heckler, Reserve; and many othars. A groat many gpectat-ors also gathered on the surrounding hills to witness the: sport. About 20 horsemen fol'owed the huntsman over the first jump, a gorse hedge, all getting over safely. The second, a post aad rails, 8&w more ihan one refusal. A short run brought the field to a capped wire, where Mr Strocaoh's mount after landing slipped aad fell, but he wxs soon up and goiug again. Over another garse hedge and then one of the stiffsst jumps was met, and safeiy negotiated at the first attempt by Messrs Beasley, Aitcbeson, Cojkerill, Orbell, Munroe, and Dempster. Fraud here did not beiie her name, absolutely refusing in spile of Mr Mallock's vigorous and piucky attempts to get her over. Then down a rather steep hill and across Mr Townsend's paddocks to the water jump, and more empty saddles. The pace here became very fast, Beatrice being pushed along by the master and revelling in the jumps. Mr Stronaeh, who had been catching the leaders very fast, again had the misfortune to come down. The next fence a double, was dieastrous to Mr Dempster on Scratohback. Here a big tussle to ba first in ensued, acd those to finish immediately behind the master were Coekerill, Munroe, OrSell, and Aiteheson, aad many others soon catho etrsggling in. Thus ended one of the most enjoyable runs ever held in the district everyone being well pleased with th° day's sport, aud feeling especially grateful to such good sporiißinen aa Messrs M'Garry, Duucau Maxwell, Townsend. Cantrell, and Heokler for the use of their land.
