WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting o£ this county council was held in the County Council Chambers, Palmerstcuyo'n the 10th inst., at which there were present the Chairman (Mr T. Muir) and Crs J. Hartstonge Jan., D. Kennedy, M. Isbister, R. Maiheaon, J. J. Ramsay, D. Bobs, and W. Stewarb. ■... - PETITIONS. " ,'■'■_ Mr T. Edwards and nine obher miners'in block 111, Rock and Pillar district,, oefcitioned the council to crest a chair across!;ti>s river opposite.the railway ,tunnel at Hyde, as they were-unable to cross the Taieri river for s'tcres. They ppinted out that a good deal of revepue •would be received from that district, and the petitioners expressed.a hope that the council would co-operate with the" Maniototo CountryCouncil and afford them the means of crossing the river.—Gr Kamsay moved, and Cr D. Boss seconded—" That the clerk be instructed to apply to the Vincent County Council for information as to the cost of chairs."-—Carried. - Mr R. A. Westo'n and four other miners m the Donback district petitioned the council to make a permsnent pier or stand for the planks at the crossing over the Shag river '(M'Adie's j road) either by erecting a stnall concrete jiier or putting two posts in the. shingle for the planks to rest on. The grauting of the prayer of the petition would prove a .public convenience, and the cost would ba trifling. ' The petitioners offered to assist with labour if a permanent job was intended. The planks furnished some tbree years_ ago bad been carefully looked after. ~The inspector pointed out that it would ba impossible to put in cement piers owing to the nature of the bottom.—The petition was referred to the inspector, with power to attend' to the matter. ■■; ' = , '■•'.• ' ■ ' ■ PAYMENTS.' • - Accounts for the mouth, amounting to ££71 3s, were passed for payment. INSPECTOR'S BEPOKTS. : .'. ■ The Inspector reported as under:— Bushy Riding.—There was a bad entrance into Clark and M'Gregor's property, at the junction of the Main road, which required reforming, before putting tailings on, which they had agreed to give. The place was shaded,, and stesp, and required grading. The council agreed to'^call for tenders for-the work, to be lodged by next meeting. The Shag Point Costl Company had had put in the pipes oh the Coal Point road. The i Inspector also stated that h.B was getting the I river crossings and planks put in order. With respect to the county roads, he refrained from I referring to them at the present meeting, ast&e | frost had been too severe.—Received. [ The Inspector also, reported that complaints [ hid been made with respect to hawker's camp- | ing in oat-of-the-way places and using lights, i and thus frightening horses, while others left | goods on tha sides of the roads. He asked for : instructions as to the enforcement of the bylaw by taking proceedings against the offenders. —Parties to be cautioned -with respect to the complaints. i COBHESPONDENCE. The Department of Agriculture, Wellington, forwarded circular re Arbor Day, and enclosing pamphlets for distribution.—Cr Haktstokge moved, and Cr Kennedy seconded—"That the usual number of trees be distributed to the different.schools in the county, for purposes of planting."—Carried.

The County Clerk, Maniototo County Council, wrote stating that the mounted constable there had been appointed by the council to inspect miners' rights and to prosecute in cases where mining was carried oa -without a right.—The council resolved to appoint Constable Hilliard as inspector of miners' rights acd hawkers' licensee, allowing him 10 per cent, on all miners' rights and licenses issued by him. Mr 6. Donaldson, Macraes, ■wrote applying as lessee of sections 10, 11, 12, block IX, Highlay district, to have any moneys held by tho council from fourths from the sections^ spent on the road - leading down to Deepdell Creek at the Golden Point battery.— Resolved, on the motion of Cr Hartstonge,, seconded by Cr Ramsay—-" That tenders bscalled for the work by next meeting, tfaeexpsaditure to ba limited to £20 of land revenue."

The District Land Office, Danedin, wrote intimating that the sum of £205 6s, thirds and fourths, accrued during the period from October 29, 1894, to January 26,1895, had been remitted to the credit of the council at the Colonial Bank, Palmetston.—Received.

The Treasury, Y^elliogton, wrote stating that She sums of £3 Ms, goldfislds revenue, and 9s, fines, had been remitted to the credit of the council at the Colonial Bank, Palmeraton. • Received. ■ •

Mr J. Gray, Pahnerston, applied for a share of the county work.—Received.

Mr J. Duncan, Jan., Palmer3tou, wrots asking the council to consider the advisability of carrying through M'Kean's road from whera" ii now terminates to the Main North road. There was some probability of the paddock being sold which gave him access up the wOiey, and this would stop the present read and cause considerable inconvenience to settlers wbo nsa frhs road to the factory, as well as the general public—Referred to the chairman to report at nf xt meeting as to the cost of the road, &c. The Land Tax department, Wellington, forwarded a declaration re subsidy for the year ending June 30, 189S.—Received.

The Department of Lands and Survey, Dunedia, wrote stating that the road running along the foreshore in front of sections 1 of 20 2 of 21, and 58, block 111, Moecaki. district', was Crown land, and was closed under " Tbe Special Powers and Contracts Act 1885," for the purpose o| leasing the same to the' Shag Point Ooal Coiapauy, but was stilt Crown land.; —Received. COKTEACT. The tender of Mr J. Kitchen wss accepted for contract 277, supply of 160 yards of gravel on Sutherland's road, to the property of Mr Dcuald Eoss, Headowbauk, at Is 3Jd per yard.

Cr Haetstokqe moved, and Cr Isbisxek seconded —"That tenders bs called for tha formation of road from M'Lean's on the Blain road at Moonlight to Griffith's corner, about 45 chains; cost to ba defraj-ed out of geaeral revenue."—Carried. •

Cr Ramsaz moved, and Cr Hatheson seconded—" That the clerk bs instructed to communicate witb. the member for the district with respect to the grant for the Capbnrn bridge, and calling attention to the manner tha eoancil had been treated by the Public Works denarbment in the matter."
