A FEMALE LEVANTER.
ALLEGED FORGERIES.
Nafi_;r, May 7. A woman has been arrested in Sydney under peculiar circumstances. Her husband, R. C. Laws, is a mechanical engineer well respected. He had saved some money, and wa>; also secretary and treasurer of the Reehabite Lodge, having aboufc £300 of its funds in hand. He gave his wife deposit notes ou both accounts to relodge the deposits in the Bank of New Zealand. Some time after she said she was going to nurse a friend afc Tomoana, and went against; fche remonstrances of her husband, who was leffc with eight young children. As she did nofc return he tnsde inquiries and found she had never beon afc Tomoaoa, but had gone on to Wellington and taken a steamer for Sydney, en route to England. The husband then instituted further inquiries, discoverini** fchat she had forged his name, withdrawing all his money and that of tha Rechabitas, and forged deposit receipts with the name of the manager of the bank. She was arrested before sho could start fo_ England.
