THE TARIFF COMMISSION.

The Tariff Commission met for the lirst time in Dunedin yesterday morning »t the Ministers' oiDce in Bend etreet. The Hon. W. J. Steward was in tho chair, and tho members present were—Messrs J. M'Gowan, J. Stovoua, W. W. Tamier, T. Mackenzie, aud W. Hutchisou, H.H.R's. Mr W. T. Glasgow (secretary of customs), Mr E. W. Kano (secretary of tha commission), and Mr Russell (shorthand writer) were also present. Owing to ths holiday, it was decided to adjourn until to-day tit half-past 10, when tho first evidence will be taken. Tbis sitting and subsequent sittings will be held in tho Land Board room in the Post Offico building, as the Ministers' roem was found to ba unsuitable for deputations, &o. Duricg their stay hero the commissioners will have three sittings daily—morning, afternoon, and evening. A number of applications to give evidence have been received, and the coraniisMoners, at their sitting yesterday morning, ilied the tiniu for hearing this evideuce so fin: as the three days—Thursday, Friday, aud Saturday—at present at their disposal would allow. All applicants who have not reoeived ivn intimation on tho present occasion will receive oiio upon tho return of the commission from the south. On Monday morning the commissioners go to Invercnrgill, aud on their way back thoy intend to stop at one or two places to taka evidencs. Their second viait to Duuedin will probably extend over a wesi.
