Auckland, January 21,

A saloon passenger on the Monowai, from Sydney to Wellington, named Peaks, was found at 1 o'clock to-night in hia cabin by the chief steward, in a stata of coma. He died in a few minutes. Au empty bottle of ciilorodyne was found in his cabin, and a full one in hie pocket, which had Apparently been purchased from a local chemist. He came on board at Sydney apparently suffering from the effects of drink, but he wasrefuael drink on the paanage. He went ashore early this morning, and returned fit 9 a.m., and went to his cabin, where be bad been all day till he was found this evenning by the chief steward. In his bolt were found nine sovereigns and some loose silver.

Several girls were bathing, when one of them, Nellie I'rebble, got, beyond her depth, and, bacomiug exhausted by her struggles, could not; gain the land through the force of the backwash. At the inquest held this morning touching the death of the boy William Henry Cowper, who was run over by a tranicar at New Brighton on Saturd.-iy, the evidence showed that he had stepped off the wrong way, and, hold, in;; on to tho oar, was dragged under the wheels of the second car. The deceased's statement that he was pushed off by another boy was not borne out by the evidence,, which showed that no one else was on the platform at the time. A verdict of accidental death, and that no blame was attachable to the officials of the New Brighton Tramway Compaby, nag returned.

The son of the Hon. W. C. Walker, who waa injured by falling over the cliff near the lighthouse on November 9, and lias been at the casual ward, Lyttelton, ever since with a broken thigh, was recently the victim of anotne* accident. The thigh had so far recovered as to allow young Walker to get about, and while moving about the ward he accidentally clipped and broke the thigh again at the same plica.
