LAWRENCE.
{From Our Own Correspondent.) October 30. The farmers are still cryine out for rain, and"sn spite of the weather prognostications it is still conspicuous by its absence. ( An exhibitiou of the Planet Jun. cultivator •was given on Mr D. CachraDe's land yesterday lorenoon. A good many agriculturists attended, and expressed themselves highly pleased with the work done. Mr Herbert (of Horbert and Co., wliq are the local agects) booked a number of ordera at the exhibition, which was carried out by an American expert on behalf of Messrs Nimmo and Blair. The Tuapcka Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club opened their green on Thursday last, and .the weather being lovely the attendance ;was very large. The usual matches between president and vice-president were played, xiiternoon xea was dispensed by Mrs J. fl. Jackson, and altogether the opening was; a great success. Mr Crabb, the Temperance lecturer, gavo an address to a large audience in the Volunteer Hall last evening. Heiia very powerful orator, aad spares no one who does not see the drink question from the prohibition.point of view. He is particularly hard oh profenbing Christians who do not' band themselves against the drinking customs ; and as for those piHars of the church who subscribe largely to church matters, yet sell wines and epirite, bis denunciations, are severe indeed After Mb address he initiated a Good Templar Lodge, which will tend to keep the liquor traffic a little more prominently under surveillance. At the end of last week we had quite ft chapter of accidents, fortunately none of them being atteoded with very serious results. One happened going down the big hill between Lawrence and lieaumont to Mr Young's conveyance. Mr Young dropped something on the road, and jumped down to go back for it, telling a Chinaman who was oc board to drive on and he would overtake him. The Chinaman, instead of driying on, drove oft the road, capsized the trap, whicti was damaged, as well as the contents. On Saturday one of Herbert and Cos. carters was out delivering goods. In getting out of the cart with a pejam- ! bulator he started the horse, which bolted, knocking him down, inflicting severe bruises, smashing the pram., and damaging the cart ami harness. On the same day Constable M'AHan, riding on the Weatherstones road, had his horse frightened by some children on the railway bridge, causing it to bplt apd throw 11,'AUan, who escaped with a few bruises and a severe flhakiog,. ' We are anxiously waiting for a settlement of the Waipori difficulty, and trnst the many promises made by Government will be speedily carried out. fiairy and rabbit .canning factories are still talked of, and as the farmers' clubs seem inclined to take the matter up in a practical form, it is to be hoped they will not a.Uow the matter to drop without establishing one or both. We have three teams carrying steadily between Dunedm and this place. Thty get loading both ways, and seem to be satitped with the results Surely there must be something wrong with our railway tariff when horse traffic can compete successfully with them ... Nothing phenomenal in mining at present in this quarter, but there is a strong impression that with a little assistance in prospecting in this district the mining industry will revive and more money come into circulation.
