Petitions havo been forwarded to Wellington against the Government proposal to placa a tax upon imported fruit and against the proposal to prohibit the importation of fruit from cotiiin moth affected diatricts. At the Police Court James Beard was called, on remand, to answer a charge that he did kill and slay one Eric Hait M'Cullough. A remand was granted until Tuesday. Wellington. August 7. The Hon. J. G. Ward has rccei%'ed a communication from the owner of the steam whaler Antarctic stating that it is not his wish or will that the vessel shall fish for seals on New Zealaud territory, and that he ha 3 sent strict instructions to tho captain of the Ant-.rctic to this effect. At the Supreme Court the jury in Best's oa«e were unable to agrea and wero discharged, tho Crown entering a nolle prosequi. The judge remarked that a second trial would have resulted in conviction, and application for probation would probably have t.3eu successful. In discharging tho jury, his Honor made some strong remarks on tho action of some counsel in taking full advantage of the systom of challenging jurymen. Best was then discharged. John Wheeler, alia 3 " Crooked" Mick, was convicted of larceny at Masterton, and sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment. Esginald Bleckloy was convictid of forging and uttering a cheque for £10, and remanded for seuteuce. The Hineruoa returned from her excursion to the Cook Strait Sounds at 9 o'clock this morning. The members of Parliament state tnat they had a very pleasant trip. An explosion of gas occurred in the Singer Sewing Machine premises in Willis street this morning. Two of the assistants had their hair singed, and a number of panes of glass were broken. The Hinemoa leaves for Cook Strait to-night te survey the routa for a new cable. Blenheim, August 7. John Aubrey, who arrived at the Bay of Islands in 1828, died here yesterday; aged 99 years. CnnisTCHUECu, August 7. ■ At the Police Court this morning Arthur Simpson, tobacconist, pleaded guilty to a charge laid under section 3 of "The Offensive Publications Act 1892" of selling pictures of an offensive nature. Accused had been previously charged and convicted under the Police Offences Act, but the conviction was quashed on appeal on the ground that the sale had not tiken place in a public place. The Bench fined accused 60s, and costs. A further charge of delivering the pictures was not proceeded with. INVKKCAROILL, AugQSt 7. At the Police Court to-day William Lambert was charged, on tho information of J. J. Meikle, with perjury, alleged to have been committed during the hearing of tho sheep-stealing ca^e against tho informant, who was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment by Judge Ward at Invercargill in 1887. Accused was remanded to Gore.
