HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

The annual athletic sports of the Otago Boys' High School were held at the Carisbrook ground on Saturday. The weather, although somewhat threatening, remained fine, and the attendance durirg the afternoon was fairly large, the majority cf the spectators being ladies. There were numerous entries for the different events, but in every instance nnmbers failed to start. The fields as a whole, however, were large, and many ke;m contests occurred during the day. In several cases the school records were lowered. The races were all got off to time—a rather unusual thing at athletic sports—and the judging, starting, kc, gave universal satisfaction. The Sunlight Soap Company presented a challenge cup to the competitor who gained the greatest number of points at the sports, and the prize fell to E. Gibson, who scored 12 points, J. G. Macdonald being second on the list. The following are the results :— Throwing the Cricket Ball. (School record. 94yds lft; holder, J. V. Lovegrove, 1856..)-J. GMacdonald, 94yds 3in, 1; Belcher 2. Taiaroa, 1890.)-The same two competitors took part in this event, and Gibson again carried off the honours, his jump being 17ft 4m. Lono Jump, under sft 4in. (School record, 15ft 9in; holder, 11. Siedeberg, 1593.)-Ma;tland 1, Canter 2. P. Haggitt, Grierson, and White also jumped. Maitland jumped within Urn of the record, and beat Canter by about an inch. Half-mile Handicap. (School record, 2mm 9sec; holder, C. Gregg, 1593.)-Hotop, 10yds, 1; Sinclair, 50yds, 2. Also started: J. Haggitt 60yds, Denniston SOyds, M'lndoe 80yds, Pryde lOOyds, G. Russell RWyds, C. Williams scr, Cork 10yds, Reid 20yds,.Fenwick20yds, Belcher 20yds, Johnson 30yds, P. Parker 50yds, and Driver tOyds. Hotop soon pushed up into a leading position, and eventually won as he liked. Haggitt, 2yds, 1; Maitland, 4yds, 2. Landels, syds, also started. Won easily. Time, 12!3ec—Second heat; Kirkland, 3yds, 1; Grierson, syds, 2. Also started; Given scr, Fisher 2yds, and Kay 6yds. Falkiner, who was in good nick, won by two or three yards. Time, UJsec. One-mile Handicap (D.A.A.O.y-JBaw, scr, 1; Sorgel, 55yds, 2. Also started: J. Deaker 20yds, J. Haynea 30yds, and Colvin 70yds. In the Urst lap Haynes dropped out, and subsequently, Colvin followed suit. Sorgel came well at the finish, but could not catch Bain. Deaker was never dangerbus. Time, 4min 55sec. 220 yds Handicap. (School record, 24Jsec; holder, J. "8. Owen, 18S*R)-Canter, Wds, 1 ; Falkiner, scr, 2. Also started: Cook 2yds. J. B. Macdonald syds, Ulrich 12yde, Sinclair 15yds, N. Fisher laydß, R. Richards 16yds, and F. Edwards 18yds. A good race. Falkiner made a fine spurt on pearipg home, but could not catph Canter, who won by about a foot. Low won easily, bat a good race ensued between Landells and Hamann for second place. Time, lOJsec—Second heat: Adann, 7iyds, 1; W. Kingston, 4yds, 2. Also Btarted : P. Macassey 6yds, G. Moore 9yds, M'Lean 9Jyds, Burt 10yds. Won by a couple of yards. Time, lOjsec—Final: Landells 1, Adams 2. A well-contested race. Landells ran through his men in grand style and won by a couple of jards, Adams with difficulty beating Low by a few inches. Time, 10 3-ssec. One-mile Walking Handicap. (School record, 7min 53sec; holder, C. Gillies, 18S4.)—Gibson, scr, 1; Shand, 50yds, 2. Al-o started: Hazlett 120 yds, Sinclair 60yds, Falconer 30yds, and M'lndoe lOOyds. Gibson bad the race well in hand from the second lap. M'lndoe and Hazlett, two very small competitors, walked pluckily; the latter, who secured third place, was beaten for second by a few yards. Time, 7inin 55sec. ISOids Handicap (DA.A.O.). —First heat; Paterson, Iyd, 1; Brodie, 3yds, and G. Moore, SJyds, dead heat for second place. Won by a couple of feet. Time, 16sec—Second heat: Colvin, Byds, 1: Landells, Bcr, 2. Sorgell 7yds also started. Time, 17sec—Final: Colvin 1, Landells 2. Won by a few inches only. Time, Quarter-mile, opsn. Time, 25 4-ssec. 120 yds Hurdle Race, 3ft hurdles. (School rocord, 19aec, 3ft 6in hurdles; holder, J. B. Thomson, 1885.)— First heat: Gibson 1, Macadam 2. Won with plonty to spare. Time, 22sec. Second heat: J. G. Macdonald and J. B. Macdonald dead heat for first place. Roxburgh 2. A capital event, the competitors clearing the hurdles together. Time, lOiec. Final heat: Gibson 1, J. G. Slacdonild 2. Gibson was far and away the best jumper, and won easily. Time, 19 3-sstc. Onemile Handicap. (School record, smin lOstc; holder, J. Batchelor, 1891 )-Reid, 40yds, 1; Belcher, 40yds, 2. Also started: C, Williams scr, Gibson 30yds, J. B. Macdonald 4"* yds, Macassey lOOyds, Parker lOOyds, and O. White 120 yds. When half the distance was covered Reid and Macassey led. Williams, who was last, spurted in the last lap, and got into a good position. He ran gamely throughout, but could not beat Belcher for second place, Reid aniving home first a good distance ahead of the other competitors. Time, Emm 7sec. ■ Quarter-mile Handicap, under 15. (School record, 6*"gsec; holder, B. Gregg, 1891.)— Stout, 20yds, 1; G. Russell, 35yds, 2. Also started: Grierson 40yds, Landolla 15yds, Gow 15yds, Denniston 20yds, Morgan 25yds, Kay 30yds, Curtis 30yd3, Cotton 30ydB. An interesting race, the finish being close. Time, 62§sec. 150 yds Handicap. (School record, 16sec; holder, J. Landells, 1591.)-Brent, 14yds, 1; Paterson, syds, 2. Also started: J. G. Macdonald 2yds, Grahame Byds, and Canter 13yds. Won by a couple of feet. Time, 15 4 ssec. Half-mile Handicap (Old Boys). — Holmes, 55yds, 1; Low, scr, 2. Also started: R. Gillies 65yds, Burt 70yds, and P. Macassey 65yds. Won by eight or ten yards. Time, 2min ssec. One Mile Bicycle Handicap.—Dey, scr.'l; Ziele, 40yds, 2. W. Shand SOyds also started, but came to grief early in the race. In the second lap Dey had a slight lead, but Ziele again got on oven terms. The pair kept together until Ziele fell at one of the turns, and though ho remounted and pursued Dey he could not overtake him. Time, Zmin Usee
