Adams wrote .acknowledging receipt of an' intimation that his, services-as solicitor for-the borough would not-be further required, and desiring to be informed if he should finish the legal affairs he had in hand for the council.—lt was resolved that Mr Adams should carry the business he had in hand to a Blote; _ The Secretary of the Port Chalmers Dairy Company wrote complaining of the impure condition of the water supplied to them, and forwarded for the inspection of the council a piece of muslin, which had been used as a strainer.—lt was resolved; to! refer the letter to the Water CommTh|e'Secretary of the Port .Chalmers Garrison Band wrote stating they desired to vest their instruments in the corporation, and requested that two trustees be appointed.—lt was resolved that his Worship the Mayor, with ;Cr Murray, be appointed to report on the matter. " The Finance .Committee • recommended that sundry accounts,'amounting to £105 183 lid, be paid. The Btate of. the funds in the bank were reported to be as follows :-Dr.-Water account, £767 16a 2d. 'Or.—General account, £254 12s 9d. Accounts payable, £105 183 lid. Total debit, £619 2a 4d. Keceipts since last meeting £229 Ms lid. Ihe committee also reported that Cr a. G. Allen had'been appointed chairman of the Finance, Reserves, and Cemetery Committees, vice Cr J. Watson, jun., elected mayor. They suggested that the council should take into consideration its present financial position, and that a 10 per cent; reduction should be made in.all salaries; that the Works 'Committee should exercise the strictest economy in its expenditure.—Adopted. . ..-.•..■.■."■.. The Works vCommittee- reported that since the 12th inst. the inspector, and staff had been employed in cleaning the streets, removing grass, and repairing the streets where neccssary.-Adoptcd. The Sanitary Committee submitted a letter from Dr J. Cunninghame, the'health ofheer, in relationto the openchanrie leadingfrom the Port : Chalmers Dairy Factory whichstoted thathefound that the. waste,milk deposited ;into the \ sewer pSedin the' crevices between the stones; and cluno to'the'sides of the common cesspool m front of the Railway Hotel. Such.a condition of matters caused very Unpleasant odours, and the presence of so much decomposing matter was a source of. danger to the- inhabitants, f- Adopted.,~M Miiciiell asked as the report had been adopted what course the councilwould adopt .to prevent the nuisance.-His Worship stated the matter rested with the roancil to deal.with,—Or Invkrauitv suggested" that the Factory Company should lay down a pipe to carry away their waste milk.—Cr MuDfiE wa3 of opinion that something less stringent should bo required. He was not m favour of harsh measures.—His Worship considered it would be wise to refer the matter to ■ a special committee to deal with.—Cr Watson proposed and Cr M'lnxks seconded—" That the chairman of each of the council's committees be appointed to inquire into the matter and report thereon."—Carried. , . The Water Committee reported in reference to a letter of complaint from Uaptain O. M'Kinnon, that the iuspector of works had examined the water service leading to Captain Mlvuinona house, and found the same blocked up with silt &c The committee trusted the cnmplaint had been remedied. In reference to Mr O. J. Connolly's letter requesting that his baths be supplied by meter, the coinimttee recommended that the by-law rcharges made at present to Mr Connolly be adhered to.—Adopted. ... REDUCTION XV SILARIES. • The necessity of Jho council making a reduction in the salaries of its employees was taken into consideration, and it was decided that the salaries remain as at present. THE LATE MR . MILLAR. On the motion of Cr Allen, seconded by Cr Murray, it was decided that a letter of condolence be sent to the widow of tbe late Mr D. Millar. RATEPAYERS IN ARREARS. The names of 20 persona in arrears of rates wero drawn from the ballot box and proceedings ordered to be taken. : ' ..
