EQUAL EDUCATIONAL CHANGES. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l am only a little boy, and not very bright, but sometimes I have some curious thoughts, caused by reading speeches about scholarships and the State giving equal chances to all in the battle of life, &c, but it seems to me that the State has a queer way of carrying it put. My brothers and sisters have scholarships or are receiving free education at the High School, the result of passing strict examinations Everybody is congratulating my parents on their children's prospects of getting on in life, and it seems to me, dull as I am, that their future is very brilliant. I should have ima- ] gined that our paternal State should, to make things equal, have given me the free education, &s., to make up for the brilliancy which they possess, as they, being so clever, are sure to make their way without it. I am certain it would take a large amount of free education to put us_ on equal terms. lam afraid there is a little bit of humbug in the State giving equal chances to all. I ventured to express the above sentiments at the family table to-day, after reading Mr Hutchison's letter, but I was promptly 'told to shut up, as I was only November 22. " A Little Blockhead.
