(Pek United Pbess Association.) Auckland, October 2. At a meeting of the New Zealand Political Reform Association, the following resolutions were passed:—" (1) This association condemn the action of the Ministry in not having introduced a bill extending the terra of office of the Railway Commissioners," in order that the opinion of the people could be expressed previous to the resumption of control by the Government,, as must be the case after l'ebruary next. (2) This association is of opinion that a parliamentary inquiry 6hould be instituted re the Hon. Mr Cadman's Tairua Land Bill, so as to secure expert evidence with the object of canceiling all proceedings up to date, and preventing any action in future, as the Jands in the bill are all within the goldflelds, and the timber thereon is necessary for the development of the goldflelds, and the Crown in parting with these lands would be knowingly doing an. injury to the goldSelds in general. , . " The Auckland University Council have adopted the report of the committee re the dismissal of Professor Aldis in order to place the circumstances on record. " It was also decided to take steps-to appoint a successor, and they intend requesting Bishop J. R. Selwyn (the master of Selwyn Collpge, Cambridge), Sir Walter Buller, and Mr R. M'Kenzie (rector of the Edinburgh Academy) to elect a new man.
■. - ■ Napiek, October 2. In the case of P. A. Herman v. Joyce, which was an action to force the defendant to comply with an alleged contract to take over a i hotel, the Chief Justice this morning gave judgment for the defendant without costs. In the case of Baxter (appellant) v. Harvey (respondent), which was an appeal from a conviction by the resident magistrate for having soles and flounders under the regulation size, the Chief Justice allowed the appeal with seven guineas costs. The fish had been taken within seven miles of the nearest: harbour, and the question jat issue was whether these were New Zealand waters. His Honor held that they were not. A decree absolute was granted in the divorce case of Prouee v. Prouse. - Wellington, October 2. It is feared that the gale will result in a further mortality among lambs. In 1887 thousands were killed by a similar storm, but the lambing was a month earlier, this year.
