EDUCATION BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the Education Board was commenced yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs M. Fraer (chairman), J. J. Ramsay, D. Borrie, J. Green, H. Clark, A. ftl'Kerrow, and the Hon. J. Macgregor. STRATH-TAIEUI SCHOOL. The Strath-Taieri School Committee wrote making application for the erection of a new school, as the present one was too small. The average attendance of scholars was 60,.and there were 76 on the roll. The desk accommodation was for 4-0 only, and seeing the building was an old one, the committee thought it would not he advisable to build an addition to it. A deputation of two members of the committee waited upon the board in this connection. Mr Neill, one of them, said that they had only to reiterate what their secretary had written. The school had been serviceable, but now they were absolutely in want of more accommodation. Since the speaker had come into town he had spoken to several interested in^the matter, and they thought that additions to the present buildings would be sufficient. They had painted the building, and it looked newer than it really was. The roll had increased since their secretary had written. As to what might be expected in the future, the doctor had taken a census of the district, and there were 72 children in it under the age of four years. That was an indication that the attendance would not fall off. 'J'he number of families in the district was increasing almost every week. The Chairman intimated that the board would give the matter their best consideration, but he did not think the Strath-Taieri people would get a new building, though they might get some additions. The board's funds were nob large enough to go in for a new school. Mr Neill urged upon the board the necessity of doing the work as soon as possible. The deputation then withdrew, and it was decided that tenders be called for the additions. GENERAL.
