BURNS CLUB
The monthly gathering of the Burns Club was held last night in the Choral Hall. The president (Mr A. J. Burns) occupied the chair, and the building was filled in every part. The evening's proceedings were made up of a singing and elocutionary contest, the items rendered or recited being entirely Scotch. Some 14 competitors, all of whom were young, took part in the contest, which proved highly interesting. The judges were Messrs J. H. Chapman, A. Thomson, Thos. Callender, D, White, R. Francis, and J. H. Blorrison. The prizes were awarded iv the following order, the title of the song rendered being placed after the name of each competitor : — Singing: First prize, Miss Nellie Thomson, "Afton water;" second, Miss Agnes Wilhelmina Caldow, "Here awa Wanderin' Willie;" third, Miss Annie Macdonald, " Corn rigs are bonnie, O;" fourth, Master Thomas Thomson, " There was a lad was born in Kyle;" fifth, Miss Barbara Robertson, " Ca' the ewes tae the knowes ;" sixth, Master Albert James Rae, "Whustle o'er the lave o't." The prizes for the recitations were awarded in the following order: — Blasters Stewart Durie, Archibald Stenhouse, Miss Agnes Hunter, Masters James Stenhouse, John Scott, Montgomery Gilroy, William Gilroy, and Gilbert Scott. While the judges were considering their decision, the programme was supplemented by a number of other items. Miss Cooper sang " Comin' thi-o' the rye;" Miss Thomson, " Scottish bluebells ;" Miss Owen, "Dinna cross the burn, Willie;" Miss Robertson, "Tarn Glen;" Miss Matheson, " Wakin' O;" Mr Braik, " The auld Scots sangs." Mr John Gillies also gave a recitation.
