ILLEGITIMACY STATISTICS.
ifO THE EDiTOKi Sir,—l hardly think Dr Moran's argument Vvas exploded by the statement you* correspondent "Scotchman" alludes to. Truth (May 8, 1890), for example, referring to a similar statement, writes as follows: — " I never yet supposed that my owu countrymen are more moral than any other people on the globe, and it will not therefore surprise me in the least to find, when the necessary statistics are forthcoming, that England ijat the bottom of the list. But I shall be surprised if the Irish do not show a better record than the Scotch." As to the Catholic countries referred to by your correspondent, in Franco the great majority of the illegitimate births occur among the infidel populations of the cities ; and such, no doubt, is the case in Italy also. Your correspondent's statement with regard to the old Papal States is simply untrue. —I am, &c, Dunedin, April 1. John F. Perrin.
