MR DONALD REID AND MR LEE SMITH.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sin,—ln his letter to the Times of this date Mr Reid has alluded to my presence at a recent political meeting in words which, taken with their context, pretty well mean that he includes me amongst those whom he is pleased to designate as the "high priests" or " satellites" of Baal.
Whether this be so or not is a small matter. Mr Reid's pleasantries are always acceptable, and I will not risk the loss of them by any dispute about words or phrases. Neither do I object to his notice of my movements at Lawrence, for the inference to be drawn therefrom is that he thinks' I enjoyed myself, which is quite true, and I am looking forward with pleasurable anticipations to similar experiences elsewhere.
Mr Reid, however, descends from the region of fancy to that of fact when he applies the words "new convert* to me in connection with the subject upon which he has written. I feel on pretty firm ground in this matter, as I stand in. exactly the same place I took up when I first opened my mouth about political subjects in New Zealand; and if Mr Reid thinks differently, I ask him to make out his case against me, after which I will reply. — I am, &c..
