(Received January 27, at 7.50 p.m.) The London press comment on the serious aspect of affairs in regard to Chili and the United States, and advise the President of the South American Republic to apologise. The United States Government are agreeable that Great Britain should arbitrate in the dispute with Chili. January 27. (Received January 28, at 1.15 a.m.) With the exception of the New York Herald the American press support the line of action adopted by President Harrison in the dispute with Chili. A member of the House of Representatives made a statement reflecting on the President. Several other members resented this attack, and for a short period there was great confusion in the chamber.

(Received January 28, at 0.50 a.m.) The Chilian Government have purchased a new cruiser, and are also hastening the completion of the ironclads Arturoprat and Presidente Pinto, which are being built in Europe It has been ascertained that the United States' cruiser Philadelphia has been sent to Gibraltar to intercept the Arturoprat on her way out
