NORTH-EAST V A LLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the North-East Valley Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by the mayor (Mr I. Green), and Crs Anderson, Short, Brinsley, Black, Campbell, and Arthur.

REPORTS.

The Works Committee reported that the channel in No. 6 street, Opoho, had been completed, the cost being L4l9s 3d. The committee recommended that the council, chambers be painted, and that the work be done "by the day men. —Cr Anderson, chairman of the committee, moved the adoption of the report.—Cr Short seconded the motion. —Cr Brinslev moved as an amendment—"That the work of painting the council chambers be done by properly qualified painters instead of unskilled workmen ; tenders to be called for the work." The speaker gave it as his opinion that it would be cheaper and more effective if the work were done by proper artisans. The amendment lapsed for the want or a seconder, and the motiop was carried, Cr Brinsley being the only dissentient. The Sanitary Committee reported that the matter of framing a bye-law licensing carriages, carts, arid drivers was receiving attention, and the committee would report at next meeting. Small matters having reference to the sanitary : tate of the borough had been dealt with.—The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that accounts amounting to L5814s lid had been passed for payment, and recommended that accounts amounting to L29s 6d be passed for payment. The sum of L 79 14s lOd had been paid into the bank since last meeting.—The report was adopted.

GENERAL.

A letter from Messrs Stewart and Holmes, solicitors, re the Tramway Company, was referred to the Bye-laws and Tramway Committee for a report.

It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Short, seconded by Cr Arthur—" That 20 or 25 loads of rotten rock be procured and placed in the water channel in Mechanics street.
