FIRES.

Christchuuch, December 7.

To-day the house and dairy at H. J. Hall's estate at Lakeside were burned down. No details aro to hand.

At an early hour yesterday morning a fiveroomed house, the property of Mr Edward Worsdell, was totally destroyed by fire at Normanby, North-East Valley. The house was unoccupied at the time, Mr Worsdell having gone to Oamaru with his family on Saturday afternoon. The origin of the fire is unknown. The house, which was only built about six months ago, was insured for L 175 in the Norwich Union Office, and the furniture, &c., in the same office for Ll6O.

Our Palmerston correspondent writes :—A three-roomed dwelling house and contents, situate in Buckland Town, belonging to F. Silverstone, rabbitskin buyer, was burnt down on Thursday evening about 7.30. It appears that Silverstone 'put on a lire and left to get some meat, but had not been away^moro than five minutes before the place was in full blaze. When Silverstone returned nothing remained but the ashes. He says he lost some £50 in notes, which he had that afternoon withdrawn from the bank, together with a diamond ring and other jewellery, and all his clothes, harness, &c. The house and contents were insured for £50 in the Standard office, but he estimates his loss considerably over the insurance.

A house, the property of James Henderson, of Oteramika, was burned down on Friday, presumably through a defective chimney. The house was occupied by Mr Henderson's son. It was valued at L3OO, and its contents at Ll5O, and the Norwich Union Office held a policy over the building and furniture for L 250.
