Auckland, June 9.

The residence of Mr Henry M'Fauden, at Otahuhu, was burned early this morning through the capsizing of a kerosene lamp. The house was insured in the Royal office for £100, and the furniture in the Imperial office for £100.

Jeremiah Hickey was found dead in abedroom at Marks' boarding house. It is believed he fell out of bed in a fit.

Wellington, June 9.

John Howard Wallace, one of the oldest identities in Wellington, died this morning from heart disease; aged 75. Mr Wallace arrived in Wellington in 1840, and took an active part in drawing up a petition to the House of Commons praying that a constitution should be framed for New Zealand. Deceased was an auctioneer for many years, and was the principal author of " The Early History of New Zealand."

The Public Trust Commission, finding it impossible to get the necessary returns for the purposes of the report in time, applied again for an extension of the term, and the Government consented to grant another fortnight from to-morrow. Some 35 extra clerks have been employed for weeks in the preparation of these returns.

Tho steamer Wallabi, which went ashore at Evans' Bay some weeks ago, has been got off safely. Sue will probably be dismantled, and turned into a coal hulk.

Mastebton, June 9. Sergeant John Price died at Masterton this morning from acute bronchitis.

At the Education Board meeting to-night Mr John Gammell, the present head master of tho High School, was appointed secretary and inspector.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court, H. L. Snow, publisher of the Kumara Times, was committed for trial at the District Court on a charge of libel, on the information of W. G. Johnston, ironmonger.

Chbistchcech, June 9.

At the annual meeting of the Kennel Club Mr W. H. Wynn-Williams was re-elected president. The balance sheet showed a small credit balance after paying all expenses. The assets amounted to £26 and the liabilities are nil.
