The following Auckland members of the Assembly left by the Takapuna to-day:—Messrs Hamlin, R, Thompson, T. Thompson, Lawry, Houston, Hons. Dignan and Swansoa.
John Mills, one of the crew of the schooner Maile, from the Islands, was fined £50 for smuggling 1001b of tobacco ashore. The ease against Linton,!the'handcart man who took it up the wharf, was dismissed on the ground of insufficient evidence. Tho tobacco, it was stated, had been recovered at Samoa from the wreck of the American warship.
Thomas Melville ford has been committed for trial on charges of embezzlement and forgery. Mr Warwick Weston has accepted the appointment of general manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company. For many years Mr We3ton has held the position of inspector, during which time he has gained an intimate knowledge of the company's affairs in all parts of the world, and his constant and intelligent supervision of the business of the company has contributed in a large measure to tho success of the institution.
The civil sittings of tho Supreme Court commenced to-day. The case of Rao v. Greenway was taken. This case had already occupied the attention of the court, and a special jury was empanelled to try it, in March last. Plaintiff is a pawnbroker and money lender, and defendant a young man who, on the death of his father, Christopher Greenway, came into a large fortune, and forthwith entered on a course of reckless dissipation, and who is at present an immate of a private lunatic asylum at Dunedin, plaintiff claimed £438 r'or money lent on promissory notes and IO U's and for certain jewellery sold. Plaintiff had already given evidence and proved his case S3 to the amount; lent, swearing that on each occasion when defendant transacted business he was perfectly sober. The defence set up was that defendant was so habitually intoxicated he was incapable of Leing a party to any contract, and evidence is now being given in support of this plea. There are some 40 witnesses to examine.
Wellington, June 8.
It is reported that proceedings will be instituted against the mayor (Mr A. W. Brown) to recover a penalty of £50 for having sat and acted as a member of the Licensing Committee, it being alleged that under clause 11 of the act he is disqualified by holding a paid office under the City Council.
The complete report of the Public Trust Commissioners has not yet been sent in, and the commissioners have applied for a further extension of time.
Nelson, June 8.
On Sunday night the machine shed and battery of the Red Hill Gold Mining Company at Collingwood was destroyed by fire. It was insured for £1500 in the Union office.
Timabu, June 8,
Two Chinamen (one a tea hawker, the other a cook) have been arrested for a series of larcenies. Large quantities of Htolen goods were found in their house. They were chiefly articles taken from the Criterion Hotel, where one of the prisoners had been employed as cook. Both were remanded.
