ST. CLAIR.

TO THE EDITOE. Sir, —Your correspondent C. W. White, in his letter which appears in'your issue of to-day, referring to the St. Clair esplanade, says: " I should very much prefer that some older and better known residents should take up the question. As a newcomer, I feel that I have already done far more than my share in directing public attention to the matter." If Mr White had been accustomed to read the newepaper correspondence- for some years back, he would have seen that the residents of St. Clair have constantly been airing their eloquence in the daily papers, calling attention to the St. Clair esplanade; and now I suppose they are tired of it, as well they may be. With regard to your suggestion that the St. Ciair property-holders, being the persons most interested, should start a fund to rebuild the wall, I know many St. Clair property-holders do not consider themselves the persons most interested in the esplanade. They considtr it of very littlo importance to them. They seldom go on it, and some of them will not allow their children to go near it, on account of the risk of them meeting children from Dunedin and elsewhere brought there to recover from illness. They contend that the esplanade is more a resort of visitors than of themselves, and that the residents of Dnnedin and suburbs who chiefly use it as a pleasure gronnd are even more entitled to contribute to its restoration than themselves. However, if only to give the thing a start, I am willing to act on your suggestion; and perhaps, as you first mooted the matter, you will be good enough to receive subscriptions for the " St. Clair esplanade restoration fund." I therefore enclose you a oheque for amount of my subscription.—l am, &c, May 14. St. Claib Rhsidbnt. [Our correspondent sends a cheque for £10 This is truly a good start if the St. Olair residents choose to take the matter in hand. We shall have pleasure in taking charge of any contributions until a committee is appointed.— Id. O.D.T.]
