CAPTAIN FAIRCHILD'S REPORT. Tha Hinereoa returned to tho Bluif at 7 a.m. on Saturday after a further search for the missing steamer K»kanui. Captain Fairchild reports (Bays the Southland Times) that he has made a circuit of tho Aucklands, Campbell, and Snares Islands, and searched every nook and corner of these islands, but unfortunately no trace of the vessel or those on board of her was discovered. The only hope that now remains is that a Homeward bound vessel may have picked up the men; but this is really a very forlorn hope, and at any rate nothing would be heard of such a rescue for two or three months to j come. All the islands upon which there j was a chance cf men landing have now been thoroughly searched. With regard to ! the Antipodes and Bounty Islands, Captain i Fairchild expressed the opinion that there' 13 not the fllightest hepe of any men being on them, as tbe Antipodes are at a great distance from the Macquaries, and as for the Bonnfcy Group they are merely barren rocks ever which the sea almost dashes.
The survey party which has;been down at the Snares surveying the site for a lighthouse returned by tho Hinemoa. They discovered traces in a covo or cave on the west side of the Snares of a wreck having taken place there, whether recantly or some years ago is |a matter of conjecture. A topsailyard, with halyards attached, and also the topmast of a ship were found in this cove, also a quantity of candles nnd a teak gun carriage. Ou part of this carj'iage are the letters MISxH, but no clue to the identity of the veEsel was found. The wreckage was plentiful in this cove, and Captain Fairchild inclines to the belief that it mast have belonged to an outward bound vessel, and [thit the vessel hsd gone ashore at the Snares and sll hands perished. Three ships during the last 10 years, bound to this colony, which have' never been heard of were the Kuowsley Hall, which disappeared 10 years r.go; the Min-y-Don, a vessel which left Newcastle for Lyttelton about seven years ago, and was never more heard of; anil the Trevelyan, which loft England for New Zealand about five years ago, end never reached the colony. Although the evidence is very Blight, yet. the lettering on the gnn carriage mentioned above may serve as a clue to the identity of the vessel from which it came. It is
evident tbatsume good ship has mot her fato on the treacherous Snares, and this is only a further illustration of the urgent need for a lighthouse on these islands, situated as they are right iv tho track of ocean-going ship* aud exposed to all tho Btorics that rage ia tho "roaring forties."
