Amongat the wreekege was a topmast, topsail yard, and halyards attached; a quantity of candles; and a teak gun carriage, marked "M,"with small "Is" across " H." In reference to Captain. Stsnnard's letter which appeared in our Issue of the 14th ir.si;., our shlppiDg rpporter statea that so far as he la awaro - and in this opinion he Is backed by experienced ship masters — It is a most unmusl thing for any vessel bound from New Zealand Home(round C?.pe Horn) to experience N.B. winds for 27 i.'ayn. O! conrae suoh a thing might occur, but it Is very unlikely; indeed, were 6uoh winds prevalent it would be la: possible for 6hips to make the smirt homeward passages recorded by them. In regard to the ship .City of Agra, our reporter knows nothing of her; nor did he quota any passage she may have made. Her name doss not nppsuria "Fincilay's Directory " in connection with Dougherty's Island ; so that Captain Stannard is a little mix'd in this part of his statement. Kor did that genUraan on hi« arrival hsreon February 8 mention that he had sighted the Islam'1, on his homeward passage last year from iVow Zealand to the United States. KrJ. 11. Jones in his communication Infers that the Island is almost unknown. If that gentlemen will take the trooble to consult the ■• Admiralty Sheet Chart Ifo. 2, Pacific Ocean." he will find it correctly laid down, and a> It is within the ioe circle he may be assured only very untoward clroumstancPs would take nhips within its Influence. Captain Dougherty no doubt went that far sr nth In search of whales, and after this lapse of years jt Is impossible to aay what took Mm Loulbb there; but we have no doubt ehe experienced similar adverse winds to those mst by Captain Stannard (a most experienced mariner), who would scarcely have been go far down had it not been for untoward circumstances. As regards the two fine Bhips Marlborough and Uunedin (quotrd by Mr Jones), it is hardly poaslble they could have been driven in that direction. Fuch a thing may have occu-red, but it is highly improbable.
