(Fee United Pbess Association.) Auckland, October 16. It is estimated that fully £100 was seat in postal orders to Sydney for tickets in the Melbourne Oup sweeps.

The pastor elect of the Auckland Tabernacle, the Rev. Mr Birch, has written stating that he is a passenger by the direct steamer Kaikourai together with his wife.

A boy of seven years, John O'Neill, was charged at the Police Court this morning with having stolen 7s 6d from the shop of a storekeeper. The case was remanded till Saturday with a view of having the lad sent to the Industrial School. This boy was before the Police Court a short time ago on a charge of breaking and entering. His little sister (five years) was arrested with him on the charge of theft, but was released.

Mr Humphries, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Auckland district, has found that extensive depredations have been going on in the way of taking timber from the Crown lands, especially in the North. By careful investigation he has detected a number of those engaged in this practice, and they have bad to pay for it,

The Anglican Synod have passed a motion inviting Anglican Maori clergymen to seats in that body. A motion was also agreed to urging upon the people to support the church by direct and systematic contributions, and avoid doubtful means of raising money for church purposes. Wancunui, October 16.

The Supreme Court resumed to-day. W. Whelan (false pretences), Thos. M'Naughton (abduction), Patrick Dillon (carnally knowing), and W. M'Dermott (rape) all pleaded not guilty. M'Dermott's trial occupied the whole of the day. The jury returned to court after an absence of 15 minutes with a verdict of Guilty, aud sentence was deferred till tomorrow. Danisl Philips, who was found guilty yesterday of larceny as the bailee of a horse, &c, was to-day sentenced to 12 months' hard labour for each offence, tho sentences to run concurrently.

The Premier arrived here to-day, aad goes on to Taranaki to-morrow morning. A meeting o{ sympathisers with the Irish cause was held to-night, and the proceedings were very enthusiastic. A motion, proposed by Mr Ballance, pledging the meeting to accord the delegates, Messrs Dillon and Esmond, an enthusiastic reception was carried with loud cheers. An influential Reception Committeo was appointed, and includes thn names of Messrs Ballauce and Hutchison, M.H.R's, M'Guire (Hawera), and many others up and down the coast.

In banco to-day William Charles Overton was called to show cause why he should not be fined for discharging the functions of a solicitor without being entitled to. The particular offence was in connection with the filing of a motion for probate of a will. Mr Overton did not appear, and Mr Chapman, who was acting for the Law Society, said he did not wish to take Mr Overton by surprise as he might not be acquainted with the practices of the court. His Honor said Overton had made himself liable for a fine of £50, and ho felt he must inflict the fine, but allowed the matter to stand over till next sitting to enable Overtou to appear. The Hon. Mr Mitohelsou, Minister Native Afiairs, leaves by train to-morrow for Rotorua, via Napier, in connection with the recent purchase of Rotcrua Township. He expects to be absent about a fortnight. With reference to the Wanganui telegram on the Ashforth case, Mr Jellicoa states that it is not correct to say that he refused to attend at the last moment. On Monday he received a telegram from the prosecutor saying that he had not the means to employ him (Mr Jellicoo), and that if he acted for him it must be at the Government expense. To this Mr Jellicoe replied : " If you do not gut a satisfactory reply from" the Juslico department, go before the judge wheu bo takes bis seat in the morning, and explain the course that tlm Crown prosecutor took whon you consulted him. Read the copy of your letter to the Minister of Justice, and ask what you are to do." To this ho never received any answer.

Mr Chnrles Louisson, tho present Deputygrand Master of Canterbury District (Scottish Constitution), and mayor of Christchurch, was to-night unanimously elected Grand Master, vice the Rev. James Hill, removed to Auckland, this being in accordance with the wishes of the subordinate lodges in the district. A petition goes forward next mail. In tho Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Denniston delivered judgment on the application made by the Belfast Freezing Company against the Christohurch Meat Company for an injunction restraining the defendant company from using the words " North Canterbury," granting the injunction asked for, with costs. In his judgment he stated that the plaintiff company was not entitled to tho general declaration it asked for of a right to the exclusive use of tho trade mark. Apart from the question of trade mark, his Honour stated that the plaintiff company was entitled to prevent any carcases being put up and exported in wrappers so mnrked as to make it possible that the one might be mistaken for the other.
