Thurston, High .Commissioner of the Western Pacific, has written to the president of the recently established Commune of Franceville, in the New Hebrides, declining to recognise the Commune, and requesting him to refrain from exercising any authority so far as the subjects of her Majesty the Queen are concerned. THE FEDERAL COUNCIL. Adelaide, October 15. (Eeceived October 15, at 1 p.m.) The Legislative Council lias rejected the proposal to increase representation on the Federal Council. This will probably nullify the resolution passed by the other colonies favouring an increase. A BRICKMAKBBS' STRIKE. The brickmakers have struck for an increase in wages.

Two hundred and fifty natives attacked Mr Macgregor, Administrator of British New Guinea, who, accompanied by a party, was searching for Bomemurderew. The assailants were beaten oil with the loss of; four killed and 11 wounded. There were no casualties on Mr Macgregor's side.
