THE AGNEWS' CASE.

TO THE EDITOn.

Sra,—l am afraid that there is not much hope of anything being done that would prove of permanent benefit to the Agnews, unless the public generally will come to the rescue. Wheu I talked tbeir position over with them before addressing my previous letter to you, they said nothing about their land being mortgaged, and although I was made aware of the existence of the mortgage before my letter appeared, I thought it as well that the appeal to the charitably disposed should be made, considering it possible that a sufficient sum might be raised to free tha laud and give them a few pounds to again start them in life. The mortgagee having now foreclosed and advertised the lnnd for sale, it seems doubtful whether uuytbjag practical can remit. It would bo a pity, however, to end the effort that is being made in so unsatisfactory a manner, and perhaps it will bs as well that a meeting of the subscribers to tha fund and others who may be williug to assist should be held, in order that some decision may be arrived at. A good few subscriptions have been sent to me, and it is possible tho Governraeut might agree to give [ pound for pound on auy amount that may be subscribed if it is represented to them that the colouy may by this meftus be saved from a probably greater expenditure in other ways. I shall be glad to meet all who arc interested, in tho matter at my office on Monday next at halfpast 4 o'clock.—l am, Ac, August 30. Geoeoe Penwick. *
