THE CAPPING.
TO THE EDITOE
Sir,—ln tho. light at his letter to me, Professor Salu has reason to be aiig.-y that I should havo apologised for his absence. But, nn a matter of fact, I did not sco it till Thursday morning. He called at my office on Wednesday afternoon and caid he would not be present, but whether be gave me the letter then or whether it caino next day by post (wheu I got notes from several of the professors declining to attend), I cannot now remember. The thing came about iv this way: Just before I rose to speak, Dr Stuart leaned over and asked me to apologise for the Rev. Mr Waddell. 'I'hinking it somewhat invidious to mention only one name, I jotted down on a bit of paper the names, so far as I could recollect, oE all who had told me they could not attend.* Amongst them was Frofessor Sale's, and this was on the strongth of what he had said that afternoon.
This explanation will, I hope, set me right with him, aud set him right with the rest of the staff for whom seats were reserved.
His reference to what he is pleased to call the disgraceful compact entered into by myself and the students is not in conspicuously good taste, but as he was plainly angry—and with reason— when be mads it, I will say no more about it.— 1 am, &c,
August 30.
