HIGH SOHOOL SPORTS.

A fairly large number of people assembled at the Carisbrook ground on Saturday afternoon to witness the annual sports held in connection with the Ofcago High School. The weather was delightful, and tempted a number of ladies out to the ground to see the different events. The programme, which was a very long one, was got through very smartly, and the management are to be complimented on the rapidity with which they placed the events in the field. The handicapping was not so judicious as it might have been, but this is always a difficult matter to come afc correctly. During the afternoon the Ordnance Band (under the conductorship of ;Mr C. Coombs) played a number of selections which were well executed, and were duly appreciated by those present. The judges in connection with the sports were Messrs R. Mil!, C. W. Rattray, T. L. Austin, A. W. Morris, and E. H. Burn, while Mr A. Y. Smith acted as starter, Mr J. R. Montgomery as record-keeper, and Mr H. T. Fulton as timekeeper. Subjoined are the events with the results :—

Potting thk Weight.—W Falconer (25ft Sin), 1 - A Macarthur, 2; H D M'Kenzie, 3. J Owen, -who however unfortunately arrived too late to compete, beat Falconer's distance.

Throwing the Cbicket Ball.—H 0 Boydell (85yds lft 9in). 1; F H Campbell, 2; W Falconer, 3. High Jump (open).—E O Gillies (4ft lOin), 1; A Sutherland (4ft 9in), 2 ; J N Owen (4ft Tin), 3. High Jump (under sft 4in).-G Stephenson (4ft 4m), 1. The other competitors cleared a height of 4ffc3in.

High Jump (under 4ffcloin).—W Gibson (3ffc2in), 1; S Anderson, 2. Only fche two competed, Long Jump (open).—J N Owen (15ft 6in), 1; X C Gillies (15ft sin), 2. Fourcompeted. Long Jump (under sft 4in).—G Stephenson (13ft llin), 1; IS Owen, 2; F Sutherland, 3. Five competed.

Long Jump (uuder 4ffc lOin).—H Ulrich (lift 6in), 1; W Gibson, 2; S Anderson, 3. Half-mile Handicap (Mrs Belcher' 3 prize).—S Batchelor (30yds), 1: F H Campbell (scratch), 2; G Stephenson (15yds), 3. There were 33 entries for tins event, but only 20 started, Stephenson took the lead, and was overhauled by Batchelor. Campbell spurted and came througii hia men, but could not catch Batchelor, and so was compelled to be satisfied with second place, forwhich position a game contest took place between him and Stephenson. The smaller boya were nofc sufficiently haudicapped and were never in the race. Tims, 2min 15 3-osec. 100 yds, Open (Mr J M Eitehie's prize).-J Owen, I*, W J Cran, 2; F H Hughes, 3. In the first heat, Cran ran first and Butement second, the time being II 4-ssec, and, in the seoond heat, J Owen took premier position, Hughes being next to him. Owen's time was l?sec, but, in the final lie reduced ifc to 11 2-ssec.

lOOybs IIANniCAP (under 13).—H Eitchie (4yds), 1; L Douglas (scratch), 2; F Ulrich (2yds), 3. This evett was run in five heats, the final terminating as above. Time, 13 2-ssec—ln the first heab, S AnderBon (3yds) took first place, with Douglas next. Time, 132-osec. Ulrich won the second heat, with G J Thomson (scratch) second, in 14 l-ssec. In the third. Eitchie lauded a winner in 13 3-ssec, P Braithwaite (3yds) second; and in the fourth heat, wmch was run in 144-osec, J A Haggitt (3yds) and J W "Ritchie (syds) occupied first and second place respecbivelv.

lOOyds'Handicap (under 16).—F Hardy (3yds), 1; G Stephenson (scratch), 2; E Williams (scratch;, 3. This event was also run in five heats, Hardy winning the final in 12sec. This was well contested, the three finishing close. The positions in the other heats were-Firsfc: F Hardy 1; H F Gibson (scratch), 2; time, 12 2-ssec. Second: B Jolly (scratch) 1; B Macassey (3yds), 2; time, 12 2-ssec. Third: B Williams, 1; p Hodgkins (syds), 2; time, 12 2-ssec. Fourth: Stephenson, 1; J Landells (2yds), 2: time, 12sec.

One Mile Bicycle Handicap (Roadsters). Old boys oaly.—B Boot (160 yds), 1; J Howlison (scratch), 2; W A Low (90yds), 3. H X Hooper (scratch), C Ziele (.35yds). H Barron (50yds), H Inglis (50yds), and E Howlison (90yds) alao started. At the home turn J Howlison spurted gamely, but was unable to head Boot, who was never deprived of premier position, and came iv au easy winner by fully 20 lengths, his handicap evidently being too much. Time, 3min 33 2-ssec.

Football Kicking Competition.—B Webster (1 points), l; J M'Brearty (2 points), 2. The conditions were-drop kick at 30yds from goal, and place at 40 ; three kicks at each distance • a goal to count one point. Webster succeeded in placing three points to his credit at 30yds and one at 40yds. D J Burt, W Fitchett, and M'Brearty tied for second place with two points each, and it was decided to allow them one kick each afc 30yds, the result beine a goal for M'Brearty to nothing. 200 yds Handicap (masters'prize).—H Mackenzie (10yds), 1; C Maude (Byds). 2; F H Hughes (6vds), 3. In fche first heat J N Owen (scratch) came through his opponents, of whom there were 11, in good style, beating Maude, who took second place by about a yard, and finishing strong. Time, 24 l-ssec. Mackenzie took first place in the second heat, beating F H Hughes (6yds) by about a couple of yarda. Time, 24 2-ssec. Mackenzie's time in the final was 21 l-ssec.

100 yds (open), old boys aud members of Carisbrook C.C. (Mrs Gillies' prize).—A S M Poison, I;AW Morns, 2; J M Nicolson, 3. There were four starters, and the time was 10 -1-osec.

One-milk Walking Handicap (Dr Batehelor's prize).—J M'Brearty (scratch), 1; N Owen (70yds), 2; D J Burt (35yds), 3. Six competed in this event, which was won with the greatest ease by M'Brearty. An exciting race for second place between Owen and Burt, who walked side by 6ide for about it round of the course, resulted in "favour of Owen by a short lead. Timo, Bm.in 28 2-ssec.

Quaki'iik-mile (open), l'rize given by Mr James Allen, M.H.U.—J N Owen, 1; 'W J Cran, 2; F J Butement, 3. Cran maintained the lead till near the finish, when ho was challenged by Owen, who came in lirst with a small lead. Cran was completely pumped at the finish. Time, 60 l-ssec.

Tiiiieb-mile Bicycle Handicap (roadsters). Old boys only— X Boot (350yd3), 1; J Howlison (50yds), 2 ; IV A Low (210 yds), 3. Boot, who started with the big handicap, maintained the lead to the finish, and camo iv an easy winner by about 200 yds. A good raco took place between Howlison and Low for second position, but at the home turn Howlison shot away from liis man, beating him by about five or six lengths, and finishing very strong. Time, llmin 27 2-ssec. .

120 yds Hurdle Baoe.— 3 N Owen, 1; G Stephenson, 2; B Jolly, 3. This was closely contested, there not. being above a foot or so between first and second. Time, 20sec.

Oxe-milk Handicap (Ladies'-prize),—F 11 Campbell (scratch), 1; 1* Macassey («oyds), 2. Nine, started. Macas3ey, a 3inall competitor, ran well, but was gradually worn down by Campbell. He, howevßi*, made a strong effort at the end, and finished a fair second. Time, smin 22eec.

Quarter-mile llASDicir (under 15; Hie Hector's prize)—J Lande'l'i) (scratch:-. 1; E Macassey (10yds), 2; 0 Williams (2i)y<isi, 3. Twenty-three entered for this race, but only 13 started. Landells got through

his men and came in first. Macassey spurted towards the hnuh and obtained second place. Time, Imin Half-mile Handicap (old boys only) —A Bauchop (15yds), 1; ASM Poison (2^9-W Anderson (30yds), 3.
