BLUESKIN RACES.

The Blueskin Jockey Club had a very satisfactory attendance for their races an Saturday, £s the weather was beautiful and ahout 250 took advantage of the excursion train *f rom Duuedin, many probably as much for the sake of the outing as for the sport. The raciDg, in. fact, was very poor, but visitors were compensated by the ipretty scenery and the sun«hine.- Mr K. B.Ferguson's paddock was lent •for the-course, but besides having only a circuit of about half a mile, it was very undulating and •some of the corners were dangerously eharji. The unsuitable course had perhaps a good deal *o do with the numerous scratchings. Certainly most unsatisfactory fields turned out, the Maiden Plate'being a walkover, and the Cup lace being left between two out of five entered. There were two trots, both of which were won with .ease by Blr Sheridan's Othello, who got the limit start in each event. The Flying Handicap fell do Stable Jacket, and the Cup to Idalia, hut there was not much of a 'fiuish sn either event. Messrs Mason and Roberts put £766 through the totalisator during the day. Appended are the detailed results :— '

DISTRICT MAIDEN PLATE, Of lOsovs. For all maiden flat and hurdle horses.

One mile. Weight for age. Mr F Driver's b h Blueskin, 8.12 ...

Mr S. Smith's Hurrah, the only other horse entered for this event, was scratched, thus giving Blueskin a walk over.

(Chapman) 1 il—Mr J Cook's eh m Lady Adelaide, aged, 6st

(D Taggart) 2

The scratching of Cinnabar, Cymaro, and Dodger left only these two in it. The race was a very hollow affair. Lady Adelaide showed the way on sufferance until about a quarter of a mile from home; when Idalia went to the front, and after the semblance of a finish won by about a length and a-half. Time, 3min 16 l-ssec. There was £48 in the totalisator. Dividend, £1 3s.

Othello had a strong lead at the end of the first mile and was going well, the next in order being Maori Jack, Jane, and Crowhurst Spot. Tho latter trotted in very pretty style, but was unable to make up much of his handicap. There was no change in these relative positions to the finish except that Jane gave Maori Jack the go by in the last mile, and secured second place, about a furlong in the rear of Othello. The winner's time was 9min 36jec. There was £206 in the totalsatcr. Dividend, £3 2s. A protest was entered by the owner of Topsy 11, on the ground that his mare was not started at the proper time. The allegation was tbat the boy was told by Mr Dowse to go, and afterwards called back, the result being that he never started at all. The stewards, however, after hearing evidence dismissed the protest.

Blueskin and Gamecock drew well away from the rest, and the former won easily with a bit in hand. There was £119 in the totalisator. Dividend, £3 3s.

Stable Jacket and Cassowary led from fche

start, with Dodger third, but at an awkward turn of the course the latter ran off. Stable Jacket held his advantage into thesfcraight,%vith Cassowary second, but Mayflower then came with a determined rush and for a moment pufc the result in jeopardy. Her rider, however, trying to squeeze up in inside running got jambed against a flag, and the mare ran right off the course. Stable Jacket was therefore left to come in an easy winner, Cassowary being the only other horse to finish. Time, Imin 30sec. There was £153 in the totalisator. Dividend, £4 lis.

Othello and Vesta were bracketed together in the totalisator, and there were 80 investors, -in the pair.
