HIGH STREET SCHOOL
COMMITTEE.
The High street School Committee met last evenIng. There were present: Messrs Isaac (chairman), Mercer, Cameron, Lunn, Watson, Oaradus, and West. Messrs Isaac and Clark were nominated for the vacancies on the Education Board. It was reBolved—" That as an answer to Mr Park's statement made at the breaking up of the school, all minutes bearing on the registration of marks be published." It was also resolved—" That the committee desires to place on record that they have entire confidence in the teaching staff of the school, and the minutes show that no reflection was In any way cast upon them."
The minutes are as folio .v :—
"At meeting held on 13th September last the subject of awarding marks was brought up, tho discussion of which was adjourned for further information.
" Meeting 20lh September.—The committee having fully discussed the question of awarding marks, ' Uesolved that they were convinced that the present method of registration is unsatisfactory ; they therefore recommend the head master to adopt a system whereby a fair and equitable record of marks can be obtained,' which resolution was forwarded to Mr Park.
" Meeting 4th October.—lt was unanimously resolved—'That the committee recommend that no lists be given under present system of registration of marks by the pupils themselves'; and further recommend 'That if tho head master desires to retain the lists, the marks to be kept by the teacbers themselves.'—Resolution forwarded to Mr Park.
" Minute, 10th Dec. 188S.—A conversation took place re appointing some one to present prizes, The committee feeling theyr could take no action as no alteration was made in modn of registration of marks ; and as it was understood from a statement made by Mr Park that hi 3 own examination nearly always coincided with those who got the highest number of marks, Mr Lunn was asked to wait upon Mr Park to see if he would object to allocate prizes upon the basis of his own examination. Mr Park conveyed an answer through Mr Lunn that he was willing to act on any recommendation the committee sent to him In writing. Ie was moved by Mr Caradua, and seconded by Mr Lunn, and unanimously resolved—' That the committee recommend that the prize 9 be awarded on the merits of Mr Park's own examination, without reference to marks or honour lists.' Mr Isaac was then asked to present the prizes."
